It Begins as a Tick Bite and Can Be Devastating. And It’s Spreading.

The incidence of alpha-gal syndrome appears to be growing significantly. Patients who are bitten can develop a severe allergy to red meat, and a few have died.

@ClimateJenny @DoomsdaysCW oh no, how will they get enough protein? (Winks in Vegetarian)
For those who can't digest legumes, good question, @3janeTA ! @ClimateJenny
@DoomsdaysCW @ClimateJenny I just meant most people I encounter ask how vegetarians or vegans will get enough protein and think really they ought to just eat some meat. Joking about how people will likely now ask these alpha-gal allergic folks how they’ll possibly cope without beef when IMO you can live just fine sans beef and it’s better for the world if you do. Gallows humor.

Yeah, I tried being a vegan / vegetarian several times, but it just doesn't work with my weird digestive system. More than one day of something bean-based, and I suffer for days. I do eat vegan at least once a week, vegetarian (with dairy) a most of the week, and something that had a face for one dish that lasts hubby and myself two nights. It might not be ideal, but we try to stick to goat, buffalo, poultry, or fish that's been locally sourced (ideally) -- and no beef. @3janeTA @ClimateJenny

@3janeTA @ClimateJenny @DoomsdaysCW it's more than the ability to digest animal protein. Some folks get sick around their pet animals, too. The proteins are in saliva, too.

And my cat likes to drool on me. Ugh! I'd better be extra careful, since Lone Star Ticks have been found in Maine. TY, @LJ ! That's good info to know!

@3janeTA @DoomsdaysCW My understanding is that it’s strictly a reaction to *mammal* proteins, so chicken and fish are still okay. Of course, you have to become extremely diligent about prepared foods, because of the potential for cross-contamination.
