If you are a writer and do not include #LGBT characters because you "don't know the life" or whatever:

Just take one of your existing characters and make them gay, trans, lesbian, whatever. Take a guy and replace "girlfriend" with "boyfriend". Minor changes only. They do NOT need a tragic backstory.

You control the world you write: you don't need to include the implications of millions of years of bigotry unless you want to. Nobody needs to be shitty to your LGBT chars.
