If it helps in the mario universe the creator has said part of the reason you can have so many types of games (going from saving peach to competing with her in go-karts ditto hanging out with Bowser) is that they're more akin to actors in a play?

As a child I spent much of my time on the "super Mario bros headquarters" website, smbhq.com, and read its extensive humor section and webcomix.
That is where I also learned the explanation of Bowser: he is actually the prehistoric turtle species "meiolania"

The magic guys are "magikoopas". If it's just one hanging out with Bowser, that is probably Kamek, a specific magikoopa who has been in several games

@IntrepidVector @sidd_harth0_5h4h since we're talking Mario lore, I'm really fond of the idea that Peach is a colonizer monarch ruling over the indigenous Toadstool people and Bowser leads a multiethnic resistance movement. This places Mario as an "adventurer" in the historical sense, hiring himself out to colonial administration in service of white supremacy
