@pluralistic we wouldn't let frying pan manufacturers charge us a subscription for scrambling eggs instead of frying them. Yet car manufacturers are charging subscriptions for usage of the entire battery in EVs or heated seats.

That business model isn't entirely new. Twenty years ago I inherited a 10kVA UPS from my predecessor (who in turn purchased it 7 years prior to that) which was actually capable of up to 20kVA but had been purchased at a discount price with the 10kVA licence.

The premise was that you could just call them up and buy the upgrade which was already pre-installed and able to be activated with a code.

It bothered me too at the time.

@DenOfEarth @derrydavis @pluralistic A certain infrared camera company had a software lock on the higher resolution images\readout unless you bought the highest grade model. All models were manufactured with the capability. I'm sure you can figure out how well that system worked for them

Everytime someone says "we wouldn't let them do x" they choose x in a way that would be ludicrous to enforce it.
Having spent most of my life around people, I can assure you, people would pay extra for scrambled eggs if you somehow manage to sell it as the normal thing to do. People would even becry your apparent immorality if you dared to suggest you shouldn't pay extra for scrambled eggs.

If you use the entire battery of an EV on the heated seats, that would make "boiled eggs" more than fried os scrambled...

Ok, I'll close the door myself. From the other side of the door, right?
