Note to cis people:

If you watch and support Harry Potter series, you are funding the anti-trans crusade that is killing people like me and stripping away our rights. Experts have warned that in the US and UK the steps toward genocide against trans people are accelerating.

I ask:

Do you care more about nostalgia of fictional people?

or

Do you care about actual people like myself and our right to exist in society like you?

This isn't a trick question. Do the right thing please. #trans

Reporting trans people for speaking up about the consequences of supporting/buying JKR's Harry Potter franchise is beyond weird and very transphobic.

I'm calling for a boycott of JKR to protect trans people's lives. Making sure JKR receives less and less money to fund her crusades is a valid and critical tactic. Asking folks to care about trans folks is critical.

Saying that we shouldn't shame one another denies our point. Either you assist in boycotting her or you support her. That's reality.

@Aaidanbird

Comrade, I get trying to get them to listen, but I promise that it ain't worth it. Save your energy for those who care. Anyone still supporting anything of this sort is doing it out of malicious intent or apathy so severe that they think we matter less than what is honestly the most boring ass work of fiction ever written. Their favorite writer is garbage and so are her fans. Let them be garbage and point your attention the fuck away from them.

When it is cathartic, cuz let's be honest it is sometimes, let them have it. Tell them how shitty they are and let them know that the world sees them, we see them, and we won't forget. But please, do yourself a favor and don't give them the grace of trying to help them grow. They don't deserve it, and they'll throw it away anyways.

@violent_grimes @Aaidanbird
I tend to disagree. It is not like you should use a lot of energy, but give a little hint here and there for those that have missed it because they weren't that active in social media at the time and those that forgot about it but developed interests in those things is a good thing.

@daarin @Aaidanbird

Sure, if your aunt Harietta Potterson McFanny who has been off of social media for the last 5 years decides to suddenly question what's been happening in the world, give her the rundown. I'd argue that blindfolding yourself while us trans folks get systematically erased is peak privilege, but whatever.

That's not even who we are talking about though. The topic is on folks who refuse to give up their boring old wizard novels despite JK Rowling being one of the biggest spreaders of trans hate. These people don't deserve our grace, they deserve a boot to the teeth like the fascists they worship.

And frankly, the continued discussion is becoming harmful to those of us who just want to forget that piece of shit exists. Every time she creates something new suddenly our feeds are full of talks about someone who literally wants us dead. I'm tired of it.

I was a MASSIVE Neil Gaiman fan. I owned every book he wrote, followed his blog, listened to his speeches, pirated his masterclass (yarr!). When it came out that he was a predator, I threw all that shit in the trash because I support victims, and I don't support sick fuck men who deserve nothing better than to die slowly in a basement...sorry I've got some resentments there, he put on a real good "I'm one of the good one's" act. Fuck that man in every way possible.

You know what I didn't do? I didn't post about it on social media just to add my 2 cents into the pile of decommissioned change that is our opinions to each other. And if I had, it would have just been another post for a victim to see for no reason other than to make myself feel like I'm doing something. Personally, I prefer doing actual something's but whatever.

Anyways, I'm just sick of having to discuss these monsters. Eat the fucking rich, and start with your heroes because they're going to dissapoint you eventually.

---

One last point, another effect of discussing these topics is that it brings their supporters into our spaces to defend them. I hang out in queer spaces to avoid shitheads, so it kinda sucks to see these asshole suddenly appear in places I frequent to defend their favorite Nazi.

Thanks for coming to my ded talk, and make sure to give all my hate to aunt Harietta for me.

@daarin I posted it as a reminder and to discuss tactics. Boycotting and divesting is a necessary tactic. I always forget how vicious transphobes can be since I tend to think the best of people.

I know many need to grieve HP, and I get that. I just don't want folks to get stuck in the denial stage of their grief, which it seems many are right now.

I've tried all sorts of ways to say the same message, and choose bluntness this time. It reached who it needed to reach.

@Aaidanbird I speak up against JKR and HP. I cherish people regardless of their gender, sexual preferences and {religion, skin color, descent}. I do however discriminate on political views: those who exclude people and are intolerant twds e.g. refugees, can count on my intolerance (Popper).
@Aaidanbird
I was disappointed to see my kids school had their year all doing literature reviews of the Philosophers Stone this past term 😬
@duckwhistle Yikes. there's so many better books to use.
@Aaidanbird @duckwhistle
The books aren't particularly well written. And she nicked many ideas from the novelist Mary Stewart - see The Little Broomstick.
@Aaidanbird I ain't even gonna pirate that shit.

@Aaidanbird I remember being a child and waiting outside the bookshop at midnight to get whatever HP book was coming out, and devouring it that same day.

Does it suck to put all that away? A little. But it’s obviously the right choice.

And also, I’m a fucking adult and can find other things to read and watch that maybe bring me more meaning and complexity than a series written for children?

No one is depriving themselves by ignoring HP. Promise, there’s a ton of incredible writing out there waiting for you. Writing that doesn’t fund genocidal weirdos’ hateful campaigns.

@minmi Exactly. And divesting of Harry Potter, as in boycotting JKR, is a legitimate and very useful tactic that does have an impact, and can help stop her crusade. We need to use everything in our toolkit to stop her and others like her.

Besides, there's so many better books! I grew up reading Tamora Pierce and Diane Duane, who are way better writers and the stories far more diverse and interesting.

@Aaidanbird What about those who are trans like me and who are able to differenciate between an artist's work and whatever crap said artist decides to do?
I actively pirate them books. And yes, I'm trans.

@Aaidanbird Also, turns out that the voice actor for the school nurse is played by a trans woman in the hp full cast edition.

Funny how practically noone on the internet screamed about that, and yet...

@xogium @Aaidanbird

There are Reasons why an actor takes whatever job they take. At worst it was that or starving. Even if the actor is able to pay their rent without taking a job, it's still just a job and they aren't paid to become "the quota trans" (or whatever) of the production.

@xogium This has nothing to do with my post. I'm asking folks to divest and boycott JK Rowling due to her anti-trans crusade. Stop moving the goalposts. Thanks.

@xogium @Aaidanbird

The creations of hateful fucks who would cheer of I killed myself do not deserve my neurons and electrical impulses. My brain is finite and I see no reason to pollute it with the garbage she shits out even if I steal it. If I'm reading it watching stories she created, then I'm immersing myself in her worldview whether I want to admit it or not and I refuse to give her that part of me.

She's still alive. This is not "death of the author". You can ask her what she meant or how she feels and she'll gladly tell you how much she hates transgender people.

If you have a mind capable of compartmentalizing the facts and you can still enjoy her world, good for you. For me, even considering reading her books or watching her movies or shows makes my bile rise. It makes me feel like to enjoy them is to justify her continued success.

I cut out Neil Gaiman so I never saw the end of "Sandman" or "Good Omens". I never watched "Dead Boy Detectives". Even though all of those are things I previously enjoyed or looked forward to. Things created by that manipulative sexual predator don't deserve my time.

To use gaming terms, this shit is cursed, and every time you pick it up, you are inflicting psychic damage to yourself.

@Aaidanbird LotR fandom is an easy switch. Tolkien was racist but at least he's dead and can't hurt anyone.
@kieraaa @Aaidanbird
I don't know if Tolkien was racist. But he can not change his mind anymore anyway.
