Network Speed Issues.

Today I finally had my fibre to the home activated.

But I'm struggling with speeds to some wifi devices.

5ghz band is reporting a connection speed of over 800mb to my mediaserver and main pc... and 650Mb to my phone.

Networks have always been a blind spot for me.

Router is a Fritzbox 7530AX, with an older Fritxbox 7530 being used in mesh.

There are also some powerline adapters in the house to extend wifi out to the converted garage where my mum's bedroom is, and the wifi dongle for the solar/battery system as the signal was too weak to reach from either of the routers.

Current speeds are

Main PC 100Mb down, 65Mb up
Server 120M down 65Mb up
Phone 510Mb down 68Mb up

Fibre to the home is 550Mbps down and 75Mb up.

At first i thought it's signal strength, but that's good. Then perhaps distance from the router... Except other devices in the same room are getting 650Mb connections just fine.

Then I thought it was the wifi dongle, a D-Link DWA X1850 AX1800 Wifi 6 USB adapter.

Both computers use the same dongles, router is wifi 6 as are the dongles. The shield TV box in the room is only wifi 5, but gets 650Mb and the Pixel 6 Pro phone gets 650Mb.

I'm stumped. I've even disconnected the mesh router and forced all connections through the main router which is in the room below... about 3m away with only a wooden floor between.

Any help would be appreciated.

For reference, my previous ADSL connection was only giving me 40Mb... So I had no idea that I was getting such dreadful speeds across my home network.

All PC's running windows 10 Pro

Update 2

After hours of testing and frustration... I think I figured out part of the problem.

Wireless devices were trying to connect to the mesh router, rather than the main router... the mesh router is connected via ethernet over powerline adapters because that's the only way I could do it at the time... Plans to change that now fibre to the home is installed and the router in a suitable location for external cabling.

So everything trying to connect to the mesh router was swamping the connection... overloading the powerline adapters and causing some of them drop out.

So I turned of the wifi on the mesh router... All of a sudden, the wireless devices are working better and so far... nothing keeps dropping out.

But the sooner I get rid of the powerline adapters, the better.

So here's the plan... feel free to comment if you think it's a bad idea.

1: Run cat 8 (external grade) ethernet cable from the router, up the outside of the house and into the loft.

2: Put a switch in the loft.

3: Connect the already installed cabling from the two bedrooms to the switch.

4: Run a longer cable from the switch through the opposite gable end wall into the roof space of the garage.

5: Install the mesh router above the now converted garage.

6: Throw all powerline adapters in the bin.

The router in the house couldn't get a signal to the garage conversion (bedroom/bathroom for my elderly mum), and there's also the wifi dongle for the solar and battery system that needs to communicate. My old home office also couldn't get a reliable signal to the opposite top corner of the house.

So 2 powerlines were installed and the mesh router to get a signal up to the home office... giving me speeds of around 300Mb on an ADSl line giving about 40Mb to the home... that was fine.

Then when the garage was converted and the solar/battery system installed... I had to add a 3rd adapter as well as a wifi extender.

Now since the router has been moved to another side of the room, a 4th adapter was put in to allow the tv/satellite box to work properly... Because wifi was working for them at all.

It's been a frustrating 24hrs... I hate dealing with networks. It's always been a blind spot for me.

But i think we have a temp solution that is getting me around 150Mb to both computers... wifi speeds have been fine if connected to the main router.

Why... devices would connect to a mesh router upstairs when the main router is closer and in the same room... I have no fucking idea... it's sorcery I tell you.🤔 😆

@Anomnomnomaly powerline adapters are hit and miss. I'm successfully using one within one "segment" (?) of power lines in our home, it just bridges 8m where i would otherwise have to put a network cable along the wall and through a door.
That works fine, but i tried before to connect been roof and basement and that dissconnected all the time.
So, keep a pair of powerline adapters in case you buy a used K50 co2 laser that has ethernet but no wifi and is 1 room away frothe next network switch :)

@mavu

I've realised It's fine with 2... it's reasonable with 3... but garbage with 4... now all of the adapters are connecting at best around 100Mb.

Removing them is a priority now and getting the wiring done to network the house better.

But this is a temp solution that's helping.
