I'm trying to write a little more frequently, so I wrote some words about the development of the original Fable. Yay!

The Origins of Fable

The story of Fable's origins - failed pitches, a game called Wishworld, and unlikely sources of inspiration.

@bbbscarter awesome that’s a great write up. I enjoyed reading it.

I owned Fable on the Xbox, I still remember the box art.

@brianwdouglas thanks! Jo Chen’s box art was fantastic.
@bbbscarter thanks for sharing, was a great read and enjoyed much of the added humor. I didn't realize how much Peter had helped you guys get a kick start. It's also really interesting to see what Wishworld looked like so early into development! How big was the team at that point?

@hogsy thanks! I was maybe 23 when we started, so having Lionhead’s support was great, particularly at a business level.

At the point of those screenshots I think there were 4 of us.

@bbbscarter Badger Trifle would have set the avant garde chef world alight!

A great read, thanks for writing it.

@sinbad well, as you would know, getting the sponge layer correct is the key.

And thank you, it was cathartic! I’m trying to work out if I should do a part two (many strange things happened between signing and launch), or a tech write-up (we had an entirely bespoke tech stack).

@bbbscarter Why not both? 😉 (with full respect to the obvious time it takes to write these things )
@sinbad indeed, and there's a pesky game to write as well. :) I'm always impressed how effectively you appear to multiplex!
@bbbscarter it’s a big fat lie I construct to make myself feel better, and distract from the constant mess of unfinished things
