@LoganFive fool. you do not go "viral" on mastodon. you go "woolly". you simpleton. you absolute station wagon
@GroupNebula563 I like station wagons. They’re comfortable, slightly dangerous depending on seating arrangement, and they can sure take a beating and keep moving forward.
@sweetcherry @GroupNebula563 No madam. I am Generation X-Men with the mutant powers of the latchkey, ability to survive the way back seat of a station wagon with no seatbelt and not die, and the defense ability of sarcasm.

@sweetcherry @LoganFive @GroupNebula563 SUV = Millennial's socially-acceptable tax-avoidant term* for station wagon

(My title and registration call my SUVs station wagons; if they were trucks, I'd be assessed higher taxes by my state.)

@LoganFive @sweetcherry @GroupNebula563 and that's coming from a genX punk with literary talents 😊 i can kill with words like a knight with swords

@Felis_Catus_Domesticus @LoganFive @GroupNebula563

What movies are those? I seem to have some homework!

Repo Man (film) - Wikipedia

@sweetcherry @LoganFive @GroupNebula563

the humor may be a little dated or obscure, 40 years on but it was a hoot when it first came out. It's a very LA/California movie, lampooning a lot of cutural currents present in the times that may seem obscure or cryptic today. Still a worthy movie watch..

@sweetcherry @LoganFive @GroupNebula563

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventures_of_Buckaroo_Banzai_Across_the_8th_Dimension

this would make a great double feature with Repo Man..

also a very LA/CA/Hwood movie from the same era. May also contain humor that today will seem odd, obscure or dated. Kind of a fun trip down memory lane. Both movies have some iconic shots of 80's LA that is no longer there because of time & new construction.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension - Wikipedia

@sweetcherry @LoganFive @GroupNebula563

another good pairing of 2 very 80's very LA/CA/HW movies would be: "Grease" and "Xanadu".. lots of iconic LA scenes that are no longer there or too changed with time. Xanadu is really underrated as a fun movie, btw.

@Felis_Catus_Domesticus @sweetcherry @LoganFive okay, that's enough oldmovieposting please /nm

@GroupNebula563 @sweetcherry @LoganFive

it was primarily intended for sweetcherry.. she was the one that asked intially.

the rest of you are merely faceless innocent bystanders.

@LoganFive
And can inherently get better mileage than a monster SUV! 😁
@GroupNebula563
@LoganFive @GroupNebula563 why are station wagons "slightly dangerous"? (Other than being a car)
@stanni @GroupNebula563 It’s dangerous for the kid thrown in the way back with no seatbelt.
@LoganFive @GroupNebula563 I would never put my kid in any car without a seatbelt 😱
Is this an US thing?
@stanni @GroupNebula563 It was, back in the day.
@LoganFive @GroupNebula563 ah, I see. Sounded like it was still the case today. I guess that was the case here too.
@stanni
I'm 61 and the first 12 years of my life no car I rode in had seatbelts
@LoganFive and they've got a big backend...

@LoganFive @GroupNebula563

Hi! I like station wagons! They're comfy and easy to drive!

@LoganFive @GroupNebula563 In this case, it's actually called a station logan.
@GroupNebula563 @LoganFive This is now official

@helldude fool. you do not go "viral" on mastodon. you go "woolly". you simpleton. you absolute station wagon

Mastodon
@GroupNebula563 @LoganFive one could go bacterial instead, although it sounds slightly unpleasant
@GroupNebula563 @LoganFive Came here looking for this, wasn't disappointed.
@woe2you @LoganFive i had to reply with this. it's tradition at this point :P

@GroupNebula563 @LoganFive

Growing up, _all_ our cars were station wagons, because my dad had found that NSW road rules had some obscure clause that said station wagons could park in No Stopping For Any Reason At All zones for 15 minutes. I don't ever recall that we used this secret superpower, but don't knock station wagons!!!

@GroupNebula563 @LoganFive I see what you're doing. Too bad the reference got deleted.
@LoganFive I think this should be measured as proportional to the account's baseline reach. E.g. if one of my posts gets more than 20 boosts I consider that "going viral." But if an account has more than 1k followers the virality threshold should be higher, maybe 100 or 150 boots.

@liferstate @LoganFive
This, 100%.

What impresses me so far, here, is a higher level of quality engagement.

And poop jokes.

@LoganFive Here, it would likely be a geneticist explaining the finer details of a specific type of virus. Educational and fun to watch someone deep within their wheelhouse.
@LoganFive I went with 50. 10 seems popular to me, but not "viral." Are there people getting 500? George Takei?

@Cassandra I’ve had a few hit those numbers (pinning them to my profile helped I’m sure), and I’m pretty sure the larger beige accounts have as well, on occasion. It’s certainly not often for me. I do feel like some of this is really a numbers game: how many people are actually seeing the toot depends on time of day, how many followers you have, etc. I think someone with 5000 followers is going to get boosted more than someone with 500. (And length of time tooting and just being on the Fediverse increases your follower account.) But some brilliant toots (speaking of others toots) still barely take off sometimes and I have no idea why. The toots of mine that take off the most aren’t necessarily my favorite, but I’m guessing they have the widest appeal.

Sorry for the rant.

@LoganFive @Cassandra

Also depends on if some hashtags are included and if it's on a current "hot" topic.

I recently had a toot go fungal (I prefer describing it as fungal instead of viral, sounds nicer lol) about privacy that hit 893 boosts and 1207 favs.

Other times a post just resonates I guess. Last year or the year before I had a post about dishwashers hit a couple hundred boosts 🤷‍♀️

I have 273 followers currently.

@totalclaireity Ooh, what was it? :D

@Cassandra

The privacy post or the dishwasher post? : D

The privacy post is here https://toot.lgbt/@totalclaireity/116049590628136071

The dishwasher post was quite a while ago and I can't find it but essentially it was how dishwashers use far less water and electricity than doing dishes by hand so stop feeling guilty about running it when it's not a full load.

Honestly though better to go watch @TechConnectify videos on dishwashers (and everything else). His first dishwasher video was in a reply to my thread : )

@totalclaireity Your privacy post feels so good to read again. It's cathartic like a shout from the heart. Or at least, it's mending mine to read others loudly put it into words this way. Thank you
@totalclaireity @Cassandra @TechConnectify already boosted, rebooted because it's a banger

@totalclaireity @LoganFive @Cassandra

i tooted the word 'pizza' and got two boosts. anything goes.

@Cassandra @LoganFive

I don't think it's very common, but I do have one post from 2023 with 1.4K boosts. I did not expect it to resonate with so many people but I'm happy it did (for more awareness, not for popularity reasons)
