I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't received any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since grants are typically for 3 years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

In my 25-year career, I’ve never NOT had funding. I typically have 4 to 8 grants, which you need if you’re running an observation science program and have a technician, students, and postdocs.

@davidho All good points, but note, most of the NSF budget has been restored. The biggest impact of the cuts right now is on staffing levels, which slows down program reviews and introduces considerable delays. Please ask everyone you know who is qualified to volunteer to be an NSF reviewer and volunteer yourself on programs not directly related to your grants. It makes a difference and the NSF staff who are still there need your help!

@davidho

Ugh! That’s disgusting but not unexpected. The current government of the USA seems to want a dumb population.

I’m sorry that’s happening to your team.

Are there options to continue your work anywhere else in the world? I know that’s also a hard outcome.

@davidho

I'm looking forward to the science centre of gravity moving away from the USA - and hopefully past Europe towards the East and South.

@davidho I am not doubting you whatsoever but can you source that graph?

@davidho
Possibly a time to research paths to Europe. Not that it is all rainbows and unicorns in Europe, but certainly more opporyunities for the times ahead

@davidho

time for science to pack up and leave the US permanently

@crumbletiltskin @davidho Like science did in 1933's Germany

@davidho I decided not to pursue academia after my PhD, and have at times regretted it, but I would likely have been at the end of my second postdoc right now and completely and totally screwed. (If I even made it that far as a researcher)

I started my PhD as Trump's first term started, and I was worried at that time. It is nothing compared to now.

@davidho

This is what happens when you live under a regime that shuns anyone smarter than they are...

@davidho I met with a friend today and the grant her lab was aiming for didn't come through. They're working on the next one but she's now down to 60% paid time. By December it will be 0 and she'll be laid off.

The average person doesn't understand the precariousness of the science community's funding situation. I don't know how you all manage to keep doing the science we need right now, this is beyond bad.

@davidho as someone currently on the job market for postdocs, I have been feeling this very much.

@davidho

Everyone who believes Trump is playing 7D chess really needs to explain what the hell he is trying to do here. The greedy idiot doesn't appear to understand even the basics of investments.

@davidho
Can you share your source for that graph and/or data?
@davidho
people elected dozens of other people who simply are not terribly bright and are resentful and derisive of those who are . so they are demolishing education and science like goon High schoolers on a drunken rampage.
