Did you know that bionic limbs are mostly made for men's bodies and when they do come in women's sizes they are not being funded by healthcare services? TIL.

@Gina  ugh, name one industry that isn't in dire need of having more women in positions of influence.

I'll go first:

......

@Gina

Sadly it is generally so for a lot more in medicine and medical care, where the balance is way to tilted to mens problems in regards to both research and development of treatments.

For bionic limbs specifically, a reason - but not an excuse - is probably war and crime though. Where for both men are over represented both as cause and consequence.

@tsvenson @Gina Yes, this. Medicine is about money. And more men than women probably lose hands due to either combat or industrial accident.

There was a similar problem where most crash dummies were male. Child size dummies and pregnancy were not accounted for in crash testing.

@Gina this is fucked up. One more thing to be angry about. I'll put it on the list.
@Gina Why am I not surprised whatsoever?

@Gina
She didn't show her hand.???

The entire video was about the hand ... and she didn't show it. ....

@notyourfanboy lol I had the same response so I looked her up (she was mentioned in the video caption). Her name is Sarah de Lagarde, there are a bunch of videos online of her showing her bionic arm.
@Gina this situation is so wrong on so many levels, and it should have been made impossible so much earlier. It's like, is a very special 'left' model also available, and is its cost covered? The default hand is right, so why bother making left accessible? Should be quadruple cost if it's both smaller and left-sided all at once!
@Gina
But… “in the eyes of the tax man we are all equal” but not when it comes to services…
& when she asks why 🤔 no one answers…
@Su_G
Probably because that would open another can of worms. Yes, women pay tax at the same rate as men on paper but in reality the total amount they will pay over their working life will on average be less due to the fact that on average, women earn less than men.
The financial argument isn't the best one in this case. Medical care should be according to need, not the ability to pay.
The simple fact is it's discrimination, which in the EU, and UK is unlawful.
@Gina
@Su_G
I suspect, if this went to a court the NHS would be found guilty of discrimination. The NHS would then be faced with a decision, supply the correct sized hand for women, or withdraw it for both sexes. My guess is it would be withdrawn.
But I am a bit of a cynic.
