I am beginning to think that Germany being slow to digitalisation is an asset.

Sweden’s digital ID was hacked and the data is out on the dark web already. https://www.voicemedia.global/article/sweden-s-digital-id-system-hacked-public-s-data-sold-on-dark-web

@janl this seems hardly a nightmare scenario for Sweden when their tax office was already selling data anyway 😭
@maxine funny I just used “nightmare scenario” for this in a private message

@janl @Ashedryden
Unfortunately, Germany usually does not wait in order to learn from the mistakes of the frontrunners.

We wait. We wait. And we wait. And then we make the same stupid mistakes others already made before us. Prime example: the „elektronische Patientenakte“ (digital health records).

@utrenkner if it helps any, this is how almost all government policy goes. There is very little “learning not to touch the stove because your sister already got burned by it.” @janl

@Ashedryden @utrenkner @janl

As more of a philosophical question I always wonder how this happens.

Is it ignorance?

Nepotism ensuring not the most qualified get the job?

I mean, often enough experts tell them what not to do. It's always watching a slow moving train hit a wall.

So frustrating.

@janl in hertling's "ai apocalypse" cycle one of the heroes of the first book is a literal Internetausdrucker.

"fax - elegant weapon of a more civilized age"

@janl @Ashedryden

What I find even more troubling is the idea that keeping the source code secret is supposed to contribute to the system's security. 🙄

@janl @Ashedryden Got some strong opinions on BankId but that headline is not correct.

What was hacked was test servers belonging to the company who build a lot of things for the tax agency. Not BankId itself.
Of course it’s still serious but it sounds like it’s a lot worse.

@kolombiken @Ashedryden that’s important context, thank you!
@janl it would be if the slowness was a result of diligence and care but not ignorance, negligence and dilettantism.
@zeank an accidental asset, for sure.
@janl the problem is that - with some delay - they tend to introduce digital systems nonetheless, but without any learnings and typically in the worst possible way. But then again, often they are so bad, that they just fail broader adoption (unless it‘s mandatory).
@zeank yup, and it happens every time.
@janl just think of e-post or whatever it was called 😅
