Today I Installed #OpenCloud and completed my move away from Nextcloud.

I'm really happy with it.

Nextcloud was by far the most frustrating application I've self hosted. If there was a way for Nextcloud to be annoying, it would do it.

Been using #Immich for a while and it's amazing. That's replaced Memories.

Recently started using #Joplin. That's replaced Notes.

Set up some shared calendars with symlinks in OpenCloud's #Radicale add-on to replace Calendar and Contacts.

#SelfHosted #HomeLab

I've installed #paperlessngx but I'd really like to experiment with some local AI with it.

My server has 16gb of ram, but only 5-6 spare.

I have an Intel Arc with 4GB of memory knocking about somewhere.

I have no idea if that's enough to run #Ollama for something like organising documents and doing ORC.

Has anyone had any mileage with this kind of hardware? I have an Intel i5-13500T CPU if that changes anything.

@connel

Copyparty completely replaced my need for next/opencloud.

Granted, that means my use case is quite simple but I like to put it out there in case all you’re doing is sharing files and don’t need any of the enterprise-y features.

@plasma4045 just gave it a quick Google and reviews seem really positive! I hadn't heard of it before. I sometimes use Collabora as a Google docs replacement so OC hits the sweet spot for my use case. Thanks for the recommendation though, I'll keep an eye out for how the project progresses.

@connel
Cool I was wondering about this. Are you using it for your personal documents etc. or business?

I've got a small business/team and was taking steps towards NextCloud. It's replacing M365 so NC looked like the closest match for built-in features. Plus the rich extensions.
But OpenCloud seems to have happier converts and a less stressful architecture 😅

@fella I am only using it for personal use. In terms of replacing M365 in an enterprise setting today, I would say NextCloud is still your best bet (begrudgingly) for something self-hosted.

The calendar and contacts integration for OC is not officially supported. It's a bit of preview. I'd recommend having a test environment of both set up and doing a comparison.

@fella OC is going to be adding full groupware support (contacts, calendar and email) in the future, you can read about it in this blog post:

https://opencloud.eu/en/news/opencloud-calendar-and-contact-management-available-community

Once they have that implemented, OC will be a no-brainer imo.

OpenCloud calendar and contact management available for the community

Digital self-determination starts with the little things - for example, the question of who we entrust with our calendars and contacts.

@connel
Oh awesome that looks like exactly what I want! Thanks for the assist, I'll keep an eye on their developments.

The release timing wouldn't be a bad thing as staff would benefit from ease-in too so I think my decision is made.

I'm a few steps behind you so not much help sorry but I'll try to catch up.

@connel yes! this exact pain of nextcloud led me to breaking it apart into immich (vs memories), vaultwarden (vs nc passwords), Joplin (vs notes), radicale (vs nc contacts). And it couldn't have been easier to migrate and never look back. Copyparty seems promising for file sharing. I gave up on trying to replace any of the other nextcloud functionality but I do miss the file sharing (when it worked). I'll check out opencloud though!
