So, I'm contemplating a 45-minute (one-way) drive for a job. My thinking includes my mom, who's 89, and doing great, but she's 89 and will be alone if I were ro tack on those 2 hours to an already 8-hour day. I'm feeling a lot of apprehension. Any thoughts?
@forestfern I’d feel apprehensive too. What’s her day like? Is she home alone? Does she interact with others?
@alysonsee She's home alone. Still able to drive and go to the store, able to care for the house and herself. But she's 89. She says to go for it, but when does life change?
@forestfern My experience of late is that it can change quickly. But your mom probably wants your life to be big and to bring you joy. Maybe staying closer to her brings you joy at this point in your life or maybe this is the job that opens doors and invites you into a bigger version of yourself. What’s your gut feeling?

@alysonsee My gut feeling? Things are going to change quicker than she thinks. Especially she's alone all day with only phone friends. Less contact detrimental. Who is she going to call & will they help?

Yesterday, she went to fast food place whose practice is order, pay window, pull ahead, wait. She skipped pay window and sat up front until someone asked her or she asked them (idk) about her order.

I'm desperate for health ins less than $1,200 month, but at what cost to mom?

@alysonsee I wonder if maybe I should just look for part time, enough to pay for the shotty health insurance...that's where I'm leaning.

@forestfern That is a terrible choice to have to make.

I noticed my parents started missing more details that I would consider obvious. Or that minor annoyances required so much energy that they just avoided the thing altogether. It wasn’t a countdown to their demise but it was a signpost along the way.

Would you be giving up a job in order to take the new one? If not, then would you be any worse off if you abruptly quit if you try it out and it doesn’t feel right?

Part-time sound ideal if that’s an option and makes a living wage.

@alysonsee I already gave up a job due to mom's surgery last June. So now that she's up & good to go again, I'm trying to return to work thinking I must return to 40+ hours a week outside of home, and not realizing fully that my duties lie in staying close to home and not worrying about the usual 40-hour schedule I've kept since the 1980s? After all, I'm closer to retirement myself, just not quite there yet. So why do i feel like I'm killing myself to get back out there full time?
