"On March 26, 2026, the Valero Refinery had a material release from the south flare tower. If you smell gas odors or you are in a sensitive group such as young children or elderly, you may choose to voluntarily shelter in place with doors and windows closed. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911."

@ai6yr

This 'You do you' stuff went way too far during #Covid, and now apparently extends to gas leaks. 'You may choose to protect yourself, or not, we in government don't really care one way or the other.'

@elasticsoul @ai6yr Like seriously, isn't this potentially actively dangerous to people — even those who aren't "sensitive to it"?

Have we reached the point where it's just normal and "ok" to dump toxic waste right out in the open and then maybe people might see warnings in time or maybe not? Because that's the vibe I'm getting here.

@nazokiyoubinbou @elasticsoul @ai6yr
Yup. The way you become acutely sensitive to crappy air quality is by being exposed to crappy air. The warnings targeting vulnerable people are solely concerned with people ending up in the hospital shortly after.
@me_valentijn @elasticsoul @ai6yr What I'm really wondering here is isn't there potential for long term damage even from this? I mean, it really sounds like we're talking about something toxic, not just something that smells funky. This isn't a sulfur spring running through the woods nearby smelling bad if the wind shifts, this is a refinery...
