I haven't been on Mastodon much over the past year or two -- what are people's experiences on Bluesky vs. Mastodon? What do you use each platform for? Which of your communities are on each platform? (I'm not on Threads & have no interest in it.)

@anindita I've mostly ignored the existence of bluesky, but there are a few accounts there that are bridged to mastodon and that I follow here (but don't interact with).

My mutuals here are people i know in real life, others I've known for years or decades through other online communities, and lots of nice people I only know here. I also follow some artists and musicians and scientists just to keep up on their work.

@ranjit Interesting -- thanks! I feel like that's how I use Instagram, while Bluesky has become my Twitter replacement... (also: hi!)
@anindita That's kind of how I used to use instagram (though with a higher proportion of 'just following' to 'mutuals' than here), but I've been pulling back from it over the last few years.
@anindita In my world it's Mastodon for nerds and geeky things and old web folks, Bluesky for bigger reach, librarian stuff and more shitposting type of jokes. Mastodon is more people I know in person (though not all, certainly) and Bluesky is more "people from the internet"
@jessamyn This is really interesting because @ranjit said the same thing about Mastodon being for people you know. For me, the DH community was here and then they mostly moved to Bluesky, so this space was always more professional and project-oriented.
@anindita I'm using Bluesky to interact with friends who use that rather than Mastodon, and to get a slightly higher dose of addictive information. Also, to follow the progress of it getting chewed up and swallowed by venture capital until nothing remains.
@WAHa_06x36 @anindita Dag's incentive for gawking is more or less the same as my incentive for pretending it doesn't exist!
