I have been thinking about picking up music again. I grew up playing the piano, but now I want to try something new. Which should I do?
Tin whistle
Concertina
Accordian

NOT concertina.
@scandigonian i'm curious why you're anti-concertina?
@dustin
Haha! I love traditional Irish music but can only take a very limited amount of concertina -- it's just a 'me' thing.
@scandigonian fair enough! it seemed like a good starter instrument, perhaps less complicated than a full-on accordion.

@dustin
True.

I played a tin whistle for a bit. It's a simple instrument but the complexity (if you want to go there) of grace notes and other ornamentation can be astounding and beautiful.

@scandigonian i also like the portability of the tin whistle. i won't be that guy playing music in public, but if i'm alone in the smithy and have 30 mins to wait for forge to heat up or whatever, it could be a good time to play

@dustin @scandigonian

I like the concertina. It's fun to play but not as loud as an accordion. You can't play a tin whistle quietly (it goes flat), so everyone hears your mistakes (sigh).

Concertinas are good for busking!

AND, you could do this:

i'm not sure that i'm the kind of person to busk, but that is cool! it looks fun

@dustin @scandigonian

I've done a bit of busking at farmers' markets with a friend. It's an interesting experience. One thing it's good for is practising new songs or tunes; because people are wandering by, you can play the same thing a number of times to a different audience (or no one...)
