The Commission stands with Big Tech in an utterly wild letter that puts pressure on the democratically elected European Parliament to abandon their rights respecting vote on #ChatControl 1.0 just two weeks ago, and instead give Big Tech two-more-years of mass surveillance of our private communications without any safeguards.

@je5perl Disappointing to see @HennaVirkkunen on this letter. The simple fact is that Chat Control doesn't do anything to help stem child abuse material.

Listen to the techies, not the lobbyists. We're here and will gladly help with insights.

how does it not help?
@je5perl It's disgusting that they resort to this kind of rethoric. After the non-existent action on Epstein & friends both in the US and Europe, they expect us to believe that mass surveillance will magically make kids safer 😡

@je5perl So the Commission is basically officially accusing the Parliament of enabling child abuse. Is the Parliament going to do anything about that?

#EUpol

@je5perl @EUCommission

Please stop proposing a legislation that has already been voted on.

This is about democracy and citizens' rights to privacy, not child abuse.

I understand that BigTech would be excited to have more data fed to AI systems, but your role isn't to accommodate the private interests.

@je5perl
The answer is seriously so easy. make the fucking platforms moderate their $100 billion industry.
*I get they would just download this onto countries in the global south if they were forced to but that needs to be part of the regulations. Can't their sentient smarter than humans AI do that?

@je5perl

Dear European Commission:

Where were you 35 years ago when it was decided to turn the internet into an advertising platform. It didn't have to be given for people's use without some controls or management. Now you're crying wolf when with a bit of forethought you could have controlled the problems that it faces today. At the time there were a number of people telling you or trying to, not let it into the hands of business. There is no way you will rein it in now.

a minion

@je5perl @HennaVirkkunen very disappointed to see Your name on this message. The Parliament already expressed a vote and this message is inappropriate. Voting for Chat Control is not acting on the issue, nor an action to address any grave concerns on child sexual abuse material, that we all share. European's report themselves clarify that it didn't produce any meaningful conviction. Stop wasting our money in pushing this agenda and start investing where it matters: awareness, teaching good digital behaviours and dedicated crime investigations.

@je5perl What the absolute undemocratic fuck??!!

”Please think of the children” always leads to more policing.

🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

@je5perl I should email those people om that letter, because currently EU framework + country law does not support ESPs reporting CSAM, especially not smaller ESPs like Mastodon server admins.

When I directly asked the german authority responsible for protecting children about how to report CSAM as a small ESP, I was told "don't bother, delete it and pretend it didn't happen, because possession in Germany is strictly illegal even for reporting this content to law enforcement. If BKA contact you then comply, but otherwise don't proactively report abuse & illegal activity"

Chat Control as far as I know still doesn't provide ESP safe harbour, nor an EU wide reporting API/service for ESPs (ala NCMEC), nor the establishment of hash databases for known illegal content.

@je5perl that is to say: voluntary reporting today is broken as we lack the institutional infrastructure and legal safeguards to do it effectively; I've not seen anything in Chat Control that rectifies this situation, but now they want mandatory reporting & invasive scanning using AI/ML, and the reports go where? Not specified, as far as I know.
