What do you do when you reach that point in your work life where all your energy gets sucked into doing managerial things, but all you really want to do is to be knee-deep in hands-on-stuff. And while your rather unhappy with the situation, you're trying to tell yourself you at least might be making a difference for the staff you're responsible for, as they're much smarter & better at the hands-on stuff and you help create an atmosphere for them to do just that.

@mickylindlar I think a manager who can create a conducive and safe environment for staff to thrive is very undervalued. I would say to your friend, thank you, and keep doing the good work! Do not underestimate the power of team synergy!

@mickylindlar I don't think the importance of a solid manager can be emphasized enough! Setting direction, creating room for your staff and shielding them from all the managerial logistics is invaluable. I have a feeling it is a draining burden for all specialists who have climbed into a managerial role through competence though...

I have a weekly urge to retreat into the vaults like a hermit and work undisturbed on something no one cares about

@mickylindlar I'm considering early retirement, myself.

Not actually retiring, just... getting out from under where I am and seeing what I'd like to do for the time I've got left.

I keep seeing grant-funded (yes, even now) one- or two-year gigs that would be fun. I could ride out my career on those, maybe.

Admittedly helps a LOT that I have a windfall coming sometime this year.
