What do you do when you reach that point in your work life where all your energy gets sucked into doing managerial things, but all you really want to do is to be knee-deep in hands-on-stuff. And while your rather unhappy with the situation, you're trying to tell yourself you at least might be making a difference for the staff you're responsible for, as they're much smarter & better at the hands-on stuff and you help create an atmosphere for them to do just that.

@mickylindlar I'm considering early retirement, myself.

Not actually retiring, just... getting out from under where I am and seeing what I'd like to do for the time I've got left.

I keep seeing grant-funded (yes, even now) one- or two-year gigs that would be fun. I could ride out my career on those, maybe.

Admittedly helps a LOT that I have a windfall coming sometime this year.
