it has taken them all of five and a half minutes to start mispronouncing place names

Come on, guys, it's hard to get more phonetic for English speakers' benefit than romanized Mandarin

(yes, there are exceptions, and I'll probably complain about them as they come up. I have degrees in linguistics and Chinese literature, so these are sounds I'm sensitive to.)

The really funny thing about this is I'm getting a good linguistics teaching moment out of it.

Sam misread "Da'an" as "daian."
my best guess about why is that adding that kind of diphthongy thing is how you separate two of the same vowel in American English. See also "cooperate," usually pronounced "cowoperate."

It's a total coincidence that it turned Mandarin 大 dà into Japanese 大 dai. I struggle to imagine Sam making that connection even after two Jet Lag seasons in Japan.

@WizardOfDocs I would have described it as co-operate? I don't hear a cow in there

@Canageek you start the second o with a bit of w

co-woperate

@WizardOfDocs I think U.S. English (assume for the moment privileged white prescriptivists like the ones who taught me are deciding) has historically used a diaeresis over the second vowel to mark things like that as "not a diphthong": coöperate.

Talking out of my ass, I have the impression this can be a stage between when the hyphen (co-operate) disappears and before the diaeresis itself disappears.

Since leaving academia, this mostly doesn't come up at all for me...

@naga ah yeah, that goddamn New Yorker Diaeresis
@WizardOfDocs @naga I was taught it in school as a child, and kind of miss it. But that’s how things go!

And at eight and a half minutes we've already hit one of those exceptions: the q in Banqiao.
Come on, guys, you gotta learn how the Romanization works*before* you go.

At least they're showing off the beautiful scenery along the way.

I love the graphics on the Tofu Rocks challenge. Extremely helpful.

Team Night Herons is two for two on cute animal challenges. Excellent. #jetlagthegame #RailRushTaiwan
Taiwanese train station names use an interesting mix of Romanization styles. Wonder how closely that tracks with when they were built (or were some names updated?).
