The Governance Stress Test: 004 🌿🏛️

Hey. We need to talk about scaling up without selling out or becoming a bureaucracy.

Today’s Stress Test:
Can your system scale horizontally to accommodate growth?

“Horizontal scaling allows for expansion without compromising local autonomy.”
—Elinor Ostrom

“Distributed systems thrive on scalable, non-hierarchical structures.”
—Murray Bookchin

Instead of building a taller pyramid with more middle managers, horizontal scaling means adding more independent, linked nodes (again, the fediverse is honestly a really great example).

But growing pains are real. When a community, #FOSS project, or #coop starts growing rapidly, what is the biggest hurdle you’ve noticed to keeping things horizontal?

@travislf this is a fantastic question and I hope it gets feedback. In a word, I think complexity is to blame.
