Because of the ridiculous decision from #dovecot, replication between two servers won't be possible anymore.

I have - against all advices - ran my own mail server since 2019. It has served me and my family pretty well over these years.

Now it's time to migrate. And that's painful.

It looks like I'm going to Stalwart. Just to get the infrastructure ready - Foundation DB cluster, two Garage nodes for replication, Zabbix, etc, took a lot of time.

I hope #Stalwart will bit worth it.

@francis i am going to stay on 2.3 as long as possible -- not because of replication, but because of other configuration changes.

why did you have to migrate?

apart from #stalwart, i hear that #mox is good

@km Replication is _really_ important to me. I am a bit paranoid about loosing e-mails, and other family members use it as well. Replication has saved us way more than once.

E-mail needs to be up, and replication as it works with Dovecot is amazing.

I'll achieve the same with Stalwart, but having to use databases introduced a complexity that I really would rather not to have to deal with. But, oh well, I just dealt with it now :D

@francis interestingly, i never saw a use case for replication myself — just frequent backups, and that’s it.

but i don’t treat email as very valuble and typically delete messages once i am done with conversation. mailing lists folders are purged automatically.

@km the point with replication was of uttermost importance to me. The peace of mind it gave me, as well as being able to trust my service, was very important. My main email became exactly the one I operate :)

@francis sorry, i try to understand, but cannot follow you. peace of mind because of HA? you still have backups, right?

here i would not care if my email was down for an hour or two or even more

@km peace of mind that emails will still be received while your main server is down. Peace of mind that whoever sends you an email won’t get a message saying your email is down or something similar. Peace of mind that, when your mail server is back, those emails will find their way to your mailbox automatically.
@francis that is not a task for dovecot, though, but for whatever you have as your listed MX
@km which is another dovecot instance with replication :)
@francis uh-uh, i see you _enjoy_ that
@km It is HA, basically. Not because of backup, but because of availability.
@advokatt Nice, mox looks interesting too.
