I've also encountered the occasional live ground wire before so i would under no circumstances jab a metal key into a socket 😅

Richard Bairwell@frank @ripper @th @ErinRose UK sockets have a little plastic (normally closed) shutter over the live/neutral holes: the only way to open them is by pushing the end of a lever inside the earth/ground hole at the top (which is why, on UK plugs, the earth pin is slightly longer than the other two: it's also at a different orientation to help reduce accidental unpluggings and attempts to use the plug the wrong way round)

i have actually seen this set up in a hotel in malaysia once but whoever did it pulled out whatever they stuck in the earth socket afterwards
if you want to do this "properly" you can buy adapters for fairly cheap that clamp onto the europlug and present a uk plug. it is actually legal to sell equipment with these installed in the uk because they are as permanent as a rewireable plug (which are fairly common in the uk and stuff still gets sold with them fitted). of course, cutting the plug off and fitting a rewireable one is also an option.

The earth pin is longer so makes contact first, before live and neutral. As it is inserted it opens a door over the live and neutral holes.
The key inserted in the image is opening the doors allowing the Euro plug access to (unearthed) power.
