first thing i got told by the electricians who taught me, is to never trust a wiring job you didn't check yourself.
I've also encountered the occasional live ground wire before so i would under no circumstances jab a metal key into a socket 😅

> live ground wire
oh god. oh. oh my god.
@GroupNebula563 @th @ErinRose Former electrician here. That's great but it fits even better if you cut the plug off and poke the bare wires in there. If there's a green and yellow one, make sure you wrap it around the key.
Also, please don't.

All earth pins are longer than the other ones. Basic safety.
@KatS @th @ErinRose they are hilarious drama noodles!!! they really can't exactly bite much as they're rear-fanged, they have the funniest little faces and googly eyes, but then they've come to somehow evolve this hilarious possum reaction to anything that seems like it might be iminently threatening and a dramatic thing where they puff up and pretend to be a big scary cobra and sometimes.... they let out a mighty.....
squeek!
that's right they don't even hiss usually, they SQUEEK!!!
@th @ErinRose i know this is likely a shitpost but just in case: doing this will bend the prongs of the plug outwards over time.
also you get crappy electrical contact
i have actually seen this set up in a hotel in malaysia once but whoever did it pulled out whatever they stuck in the earth socket afterwards
if you want to do this "properly" you can buy adapters for fairly cheap that clamp onto the europlug and present a uk plug. it is actually legal to sell equipment with these installed in the uk because they are as permanent as a rewireable plug (which are fairly common in the uk and stuff still gets sold with them fitted). of course, cutting the plug off and fitting a rewireable one is also an option.
@KaitlynEthylia @ErinRose @th Safety features of UK sockets.
The earth pin is longer so makes contact first, before live and neutral. As it is inserted it opens a door over the live and neutral holes.
The key inserted in the image is opening the doors allowing the Euro plug access to (unearthed) power.
