fellow British people: you don't have to pretend to love our plug sockets, you're allowed to dislike every aspect of this cursed island, it's okay 🧡
@ErinRose I love that UK sockets are compatible with Euro type F plugs!
@th @ErinRose this post would kill an electrician
@GroupNebula563 @th @ErinRose it'll be fine, anything that's a europlug doesn't need PE anyways
@th @ErinRose lol, i've never seen it done with a key before. i use a screwdriver.
@dysfun @th @ErinRose I've used a spoon before, as well as the earth pin of a different plug that I held upside down. Girl's got to improvise!
@Stephanie @dysfun @th @ErinRose you could also try pulling the earth pin out of a spare rewireable plug, since holding another plug upside down only typically works on power strips
@th @ErinRose I'm guilty, your honor. I've abused this feature at least once, to charge my phone during a trip, many many years ago
@th @ErinRose usually I use scissors for this purpose, just to make it look more cursed
@ripper @th @ErinRose Is there some kind of contact that needs to be closed in that top connector for the bottom two to work?
@frank yeah the longer ground pin pushes on a plastic piece that opens the cover in front of the live and neutral
@gbrnt Wait! You have to unlock it for real? :o @frank
@gbrnt @frank (in addition to the button?)
@eest9 @frank noo it's just plugging the plug in that opens the shutters on the live+neutral! It's just to stop you poking things into those holes
@th @ErinRose "When did your son's house burn down?"
@th @ErinRose
I usually take a pen for this. Btw. I met these sockets in Uganda for the first time and learned the trick there.
@th @ErinRose It is technically ok, the best kind of ok 🤪
But anyway I would use something made of plastics. Just for a safe feeling 😅
@DC4DD @th @ErinRose Always assuming the innards of the outlet are wired the way they're supposed to be. I'd never assume that, so yes, plastic for me, too.
@th @ErinRose hehe, tamper proof.

@th @ErinRose my brain just made the sound a hognose snake does when its single brain cell (which seems to be shared by Orange Cat Brain Cell logic) decides it's big mad about something

#DramaNoodle

@vxo Wait, this sounds like intriguing snake lore. I need to learn more about hognoses.
@th @ErinRose

@KatS @th @ErinRose they are hilarious drama noodles!!! they really can't exactly bite much as they're rear-fanged, they have the funniest little faces and googly eyes, but then they've come to somehow evolve this hilarious possum reaction to anything that seems like it might be iminently threatening and a dramatic thing where they puff up and pretend to be a big scary cobra and sometimes.... they let out a mighty.....

squeek!

that's right they don't even hiss usually, they SQUEEK!!!

@vxo @th @ErinRose That sounds adorable!

...which is, of course, exactly what a mighty predator wants somebody to say about it.

@KatS @th @ErinRose that feels absolutely Creepy Cute aesthetic and I'm all here for it

just straight up Junko Mizuno design fun

@vxo @th @ErinRose I'm a goth; it comes with the territory :)

But TIL of Junko Mizuno, and that's an added bonus. Thanks!

@th @ErinRose
"....but you don't care for power safety, do
Ya?"
@th and you get a free anti-static ground point!
@th @ErinRose You found the key to unlock unlimited electricity!

@th @ErinRose i know this is likely a shitpost but just in case: doing this will bend the prongs of the plug outwards over time.

also you get crappy electrical contact

i have actually seen this set up in a hotel in malaysia once but whoever did it pulled out whatever they stuck in the earth socket afterwards

if you want to do this "properly" you can buy adapters for fairly cheap that clamp onto the europlug and present a uk plug. it is actually legal to sell equipment with these installed in the uk because they are as permanent as a rewireable plug (which are fairly common in the uk and stuff still gets sold with them fitted). of course, cutting the plug off and fitting a rewireable one is also an option.

@th @ErinRose but yeah in a pinch this is a useful trick to know
@th @ErinRose also the europlug doesnt turn into a caltrop if you leave it on the floor unplugged which is nice
@th @ErinRose I’ve used the tip of the temple of my glasses for this, because hey it’s acetate, that’ll hopefully insulate the current a bit, and it’s nerdier that way 🤓
@th @ErinRose That's it, hold that key and you'll be grounded (literally).
