#FedPol #MinisterRae #AgedCare New Aged Care algorithm. The federal government introduced new payments for services for people in Aged Care. However, that was not the only change. The new assessment tool is an algorithm, can’t be overridden by a human, randomly leads to worse care. It is unfair, inequitable. It doesn’t mention in this article but anecdotally, people in the system are already afraid to ask for an assessment.

@treleanor I feel like by now we have to assume that it being bad is the point. Just like the atrocious service Centrelink provides that means plenty of people who are entitled to payments give up before getting them.

It has to be plausible deniability, to try and save money by refusing people despite them having legitimate needs and them being legally entitled to the payments. There can be no other reason not to have human review - post-Robodebt (and after plenty of other examples both here and overseas, such as the Horizon scandal), nobody in Government can even pretend to believe algorithms are infallible anymore.

@stephengentle 💯 This change to the age care act was all about saving the Government money. The impression is consolidated by having Minister Rae come out to spout, robot-like, the approved talking points. The Act had a few sweeteners, like ‘rights,’ to get it through Parliament easily. Those rights are more honoured in the breach than the observance.
