Huh. I’m starting to see some publishing-adjacent folks who were all hot to jump on the “AI” slopwagon apparently having second thoughts.

Interesting.

(What’s the technical term for when the second-string or fellow-traveler grifters start leaping from the doomed ship?)
@lilithsaintcrow for the AI grifters? I think the term is “Check out my new quantum computing startup!”
@wordshaper Ooof. Yeah, you're right; by all indications, “quantum" is the new grift, and they're starting to ramp that up now.

@lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper The "quantum" grift failed to launch back around 2004, if memory serves, but it's been bubbling under ever since.

Given the current focus on LLMs I reckon the next bubble could well be quantum machine learning, which crosses the streams:

@cstross @lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper Hear me out: Quantum Large Language Models on the Blockchain.
@tsturm @cstross @lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper excuse me, just making an NFT of this post.

@dtl @tsturm @lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper NFTs of quantum large language models on the blockchain, hosted on orbital data centers for efficient cooling!

I know, I know, SOMEONE will pay me money for it.

@dtl @tsturm @lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper … But I forgot to work in new nuclear reactors somewhere. Or maybe Lunar 3He mining to fuel the aneutronic fusion reactors we don't know how to build yet (instead of being sensible and running them on 11B, which is lying around in heaps and drifts on Earth).
@cstross @dtl @tsturm @lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper I'll set up a prediction market for that
@celeduc @cstross @dtl @tsturm @lilithsaintcrow @wordshaper wait wait don't forget "zero trust" from the cyber end of things
