Stop naming buildings (and streets, and parks, and ships, and mountains) after people

Eventually, inevitably, someone will decide that your well-meaning gesture was a terrible error.

Fritinancy
@kottke That's a valid point. It's much better to name places based on what locals call them and what stands out the most there.
@kottke And they say Americans do not understand irony. πŸ˜‚

@kottke Since we are not naming things after people in the land of things named after people anymore.

Submissions welcome for "United States of ..."

@kottke Archimedes Street. Bartholomew Tavern. so many cool ways to implement this
@kottke
If it is believed the individual embodies a virtue to be celebrated, maybe use the name of the virtue. Courage Boulevard, the Avenue of Hope will never be tainted by finding out about Violent Sexist Corner, or Nazi Alley hidden away from the bright lights of Reputation Street.
People are nuanced, and should be acknowledged and remembered as such. A name on a wall or signpost does not allow this, either glossing over or diminishing humanity.

@kottke

They're going to have to fabricate safe words akin to the pharmacology biz.

@kottke "stop inscribing images of people. It's against Allah's will."
@kottke Just meet me at our usual intersection: Milkshake and Duck
@kottke
Substack platforms Nazis for profit. They defend their right to profit by disseminating Nazi ideas and they push Nazi ideas in their notifications.
(I just think a lot of people must be unaware or they wouldn't look for information there)

@RnDanger @kottke The challenge, as always, is that there are also a bunch of leftists and left-leaning journalists (e.g. Mehdi Hasan and Zeteo, Drop Site News, Left Hook with Wajahat Ali, etc) who are doing great work. I'm not saying your point isn't valid (it is), but rather that unfortunately it's balancing that awful fact against the need to support great journalists doing important work.

I wish everyone would move to Ghost.

@chiraag @kottke
I think most of us quit Twitter for good reasons. I think those same reasons apply here πŸ™ƒ

And yeah, i also wish people would switch to ghost or do anything else with the energy they expend defending flawed outlets as necessary evils

@RnDanger @chiraag @kottke

my 2 cents:

I think it's a combo of knowledge deficit, AND that people just don't always live their values...

Western psych doesn't have super reliable /easy ways to crack that issue for huge numbers of people who do all kinds of things they know aren't optimal (like me, every year I gain "a winter pouch" because I continue to eat like I do at other times of the year -when I'm out exercising much more. I know what I need to do, but year after year, I don't do it).

@RnDanger @chiraag @kottke I didn't quit Twitter because of the Elongated Muskrat. I was banned from Twitter in 2017 because I insulted Nazis and said that the only platform we should give to Nazis is a wooden one with a trapdoor and a noose.
@chiraag @RnDanger @kottke ghost needs a free plan like other platforms
@kottke would you mind to add: and no mathematical stuff ?
