This is one of those things that I expected to happen eventually but now that it's more than likely gonna roll out soon I'm sad to see it. Reddit was the last mainstream "social media" that I still use and while yeah I also dink around in federated Reddit alternatives there is still a huge wealth of knowledge locked away in Reddit's forums.

It's gonna suck not using it anymore but that's just where we are now I guess.

Reddit is weighing identity verification methods to combat its bot problem

Steve Huffman, Reddit's CEO, said that using biometrics is the "most lightweight way" to verify that it's a human.

@Netrunner_Zer0 i jumped off when they killed third party clients a few years ago. i did try some of the federated alternatives but for my interests those are dead.

in hindsight, reddit's best for niche interest/fan groups chatting extemporaneously about the thing they like, and i think chat-style interactions are healthier for that: something that feels more ephemeral and doesn't have a false veneer of meritocracy. i'm hoping there are some good decentralized alternatives to Discord by the time they turn their own privacy smashers back on.

@tojikomori man even if we do see some solid Discord alternatives pop up I already know it's going to be a struggle to get my friends to jump ship. It sucks too because the writing was already on the wall that Discord was a sinking ship before they even announced the age verification stuff.
