@landley I remember reading a paper in the late 80s early 90s about concerns that medical doctors had that increasing the number of women doctors would feminize the profession and reduce salaries and respectability. One of the reference points was a 19th century decline in the respectability and money in the teaching profession as male tutors declined in favour of female teachers.
