Friend reports a line around the block outside the trader joe's near their mechanic's shop. There's a new tote bag out. I beg of people to find more purpose in life.
@MLE_online well its that or like, be exposed to the news, i guess
@Viss You know that the people standing in that line are also choosing to be exposed to near-lethal levels of doomscrolling
@MLE_online its plausible, sure. if they're smart though, theyre just being chatty in line instead :D
@Viss @MLE_online Some use “a distraction from current events” as an excuse to justify their overly-consumerist behavior
@burendasan @MLE_online retail therapy is in fact a thing!
@MLE_online Hopefully it's just FOMO with all the folks stranded in lines at various airports across the US today.
@Negahyphen They do this every time there's a new tote!
@MLE_online Maybe collect rare sneakers or something…
@MLE_online
Asked a friend that works at TJs about it:
We clocked 80 phone calls an hour for these %^(@ bags. We sold out an hour after we opened.
People were going to their cars and changing their outfits. We called them out and told them to leave.
@crenquis @MLE_online In the same vein, some people are willing to spend upwards of $400+ on a discontinued nylon Baggu purse that originally cost $50
@MLE_online i had to look up what this queue-forming tote looks like and of course it's depressingly generic
@MLE_online This is what they are, this is what they do. They cannot comprehend your disdain for their ways.
THEY
NEED
THE
NEW
THING.
@MLE_online are they wearing last week's tote bag over their heads in shame?
@fancybone standing in line for a trader joe's tote is 1000 percent hobbyless behavior
@MLE_online I do have to say, I am the proud owner of an Icelandic grocery store t-shirt, but I definitely didn't stay in line for the dang thing. Plus, it's a cute little pig!
@fancybone Nothing wrong with have a fun piece of merch! It's just weird when people spend hours or lots of money trying to get those things
