ios user interfaces have become truly nihilistic. buttons on top of buttons. text on top of text. multiple inscrutable hamburgers. nothing has any meaning and all human action is futile
the weird big-bun hamburger in the upper right corner opened a menu with a truly bizarre set of options: display all animations, translate to japanese, activate automatic summaries

@aparrish That looks suspiciously like the version of Safari's user interface you get if you open Safari from inside of a persistent web application (share/add to home screen).

Wild to see it inside of what I assume to be a "real" - first-party, at that - application.

@owen @aparrish it's the button that used to be to the left of the url bar in previous versions of safari. alan dye magic at its best
@mgiraldo @owen @aparrish People used to dunk on Jony Ive and then Alan Dye went "Hold my beer"
@aparrish ewww i expect better of apple
@aparrish podcasts podcasts podcasts podcasts
@aparrish Steve Jobs turns in his grave.
@aparrish I'm waiting on them to add blinking text to the mix.
@aparrish If I'm ever opening a restaurant I'm calling it inscrutable hamburgers
@VegaHarmonia @aparrish 0/5 stars, was able to scrute the hamburgers
@cinebox @aparrish gonna take away your scrutation rights
@VegaHarmonia @aparrish this is outrageous! I’m calling the Inscrutable Business Bureau!
@VegaHarmonia @aparrish
and place it next to an apple store.
specialize in icecream w a penguin as ΓΎe logo

@aparrish

Somewhat hilariously, this is my view of your image, from Ice Cubes on iOS πŸ˜…

@aparrish wait a hamburger with only two horizontal lines... an open-faced sandwich?!?
@aparrish mastodon has helpfully added some more floating buttons to make the screenshot even more nihilistic.
@th @aparrish and they're cumulative
@ranjit @th @aparrish I am screenshotting your thumbnail on a phone different than the phone you are using now.
@th @aparrish At first I didn't notice this because your mastodongles perfectly aligned with my mastodongles!
@jwz @th @aparrish MASTODONGLES
@jwz @th @aparrish gonna run an instance on a compute stick and call it a mastodongle

@th @aparrish

I was just about to post this.

@aparrish
Some people seem to like it, no matter how shitty they get
@aparrish This is driving me crazy; it’s so bad I assumed I’d messed up my configuration somehow
@aparrish "oh but apple devices are just easier to use"
@aparrish Sign In is really the cherry on top. Fucking hell
@aparrish skip the whole ui / direct download all of them
@aparrish I keep thinking about how celebrated Apple design was when I was at grad school and the iPhone had just come out and how if you showed any of this new shit at a critique at Parsons you would have been promptly crucified
@aparrish @blogdiva yet they still refuse app updates for not following the "human interface" guidelines. Blow me/us, apple. I'm not taking advice on design from the people who last designed anything in 2012.
@aparrish I've been seeing some weird overlaps but I assumed it was because I have a 6 year old iPhone and that was just my punishment for not upgrading.
@aparrish In fairness though, I wouldn't mind fewer podcasts and more oddcasts

@aparrish

mastodon does this on my android browser unfortunately

@aparrish This happens when apps get vibe coded, the robots are worse at GUI layouts than CLI developers.

Or when one does the unthinkable and modifies the font size settings, which apparently nobody ever tests.

@aparrish I’m convinced that the internal code make for iOS 26 was β€œjust ship it”.
@aparrish @cstross To clear the current text field, just press the X in a circle to the right of the text field. To exit the current view entirely, just press the X in a circle to the right of a text field. Simples!
@aparrish I'm old enough to remember when Apple prided itself on ease of use and intuitive GUI.

@aparrish "all human action is futile"

I feel like we were explicitly warned about this in 1989.

@aparrish been using an iphone as a secondary 4 a couple o months and i really dont get how people can take the suffering the ui brings upon them

like all the animations and transitions look super slick (if they dont bug out) but even if they do exactly as u want they take 4everr

if they do what u want

@44 @aparrish It was different before iOS26. If only I hadn't updated. 😭

@katzentratschen yea i had an ipad in school years ago (that just died randomly one day ofc) and i dont remember it being all that terrible

but honestly ist just all the small things for me that just annoy tf outta me

like as an android user im used 2 swiping in2 certain directions on the homescreen. ofc thats all inverted on ios but what really annoys me is that once i swipe in the wrong direction an opposite swipe doesnt bring me back where i came from

then theres the back gesture
like why is it only there half the time and other times i have 2 search 4 some out of reach ui element 2 go back
(i literally had 2 close gmaps and open it again bc i didnt realize 2 go back i had 2 hit that small x button way up top 2 go back)
android will always let u swipe back, wherever u are, always taking u 2 the last screen/activity and u wan swipe back from either screen side

also im soo used 2 swiping on the space bar 2 control the cursor and having 2 tap n hold on the text 2 move it is just sooo fucking slow

lastly ive stopped counting the number of times the home gesture just disappeared, which frankly is just embarrasing

all in all just feels soo stubborn and slow 2 use

(bit biased on the slow tho since i completely disable window and transition animations so evertyhing just happens instantly on my droid)

@aparrish @jaeclectic I had an Iphone 5 and a Macbook Air, both from 2012. Both later me 7 years, and I even said the Macbook Air for 40% of it's purchase price. Loved them, let them go. It was an era that is no longer. I feel for those folks who are stuck with what Apple has become.
