Perhaps the most important episode of Alberta Unbound we鈥檝e ever recorded. How should we respond to those 9 nasty questions? https://www.podbean.com/ei/pb-tfx3t-1a7c4d3 #ableg #abpoli #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli
Just Say No: 9 questions, 5 voices

Political scientists Melanee Thomas and Yasmeen Abu-Laben, political strategists Ken Boessenkool and Zain Velji, and constitutional lawyer Patricia Paradis, dive into the nine referendum questions and how Albertans should respond. Here are the nine referendum questions below:  1. Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities? 2. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals with an Alberta-approved immigration status will be eligible for provincially funded programs, such as health care, education and other social services? 3. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for social support programs as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring all individuals with a non-permanent legal immigration status to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months before qualifying for any provincially funded social support programs? 4. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta charging a reasonable fee or premium to individuals with a non-permanent immigration status living in Alberta for their and their family鈥檚 use of the health care and education systems? 5. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election? 6. Have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King鈥檚 Bench and Appeal courts? 7. Abolish the unelected federal Senate? 8. Allow provinces to opt out of federal programs that intrude on provincial jurisdiction such as health care, education, and social services, without a province losing any of the associated federal funding for use in its social programs? 9. Better protect provincial rights from federal interference by giving a province鈥檚 laws dealing with provincial or shared areas of constitutional jurisdiction priority over federal laws when the province鈥檚 laws and federal laws conflict?

@Paulatics

This was a fabulous episode! You assembled a strong panel to discuss theses questions and the serious issues arising from them. Helpful for every Canadian to understand these issues. (I'm in Ontario.)

@Paulatics
Am I missing something on the webpage or
is it possible to provide a transcript for the Deaf/deaf and HoH because they vote and would love to be informed as to how to answer these 9 tough questions.
@SnowyCA Apple provides an AI transcript, which is imperfect, but should give a broad general sense. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000756773602

@Paulatics
AI generated ?
I'm sorry, I don't want to sound ungrateful however my experience with videos/movies that offer AI/computer generated Closed Captions has taught me it's likely not worth my while reading it and here is why:

I speech read (lip read) and in my experience, computer closed captions are more than imperfect, they more than often change the entire meaning of conversations in movies/videos, and since political choices are life-altering I don't want to read the wrong messaging in this podcast, so I will decline your more than kind offer.

If you know the people involved with this podcast I would be very much in your debt if you could pass along my response, please. And please add, I am disappointed because as the largest age group of voters become senior citizens and lose hearing, it might be helpful for the future of our country if podcasters kept this in mind and offered accurate transcripts typed by humans, or at the very least edited by same.

Thank you for your continuing service to our country, and most of all, thanks for being here trying to keep us informed.馃槉

@SnowyCA @Paulatics
Seconded on the uselessness of AI generated transcripts.
I have auditory processing problems and software that mishears things worse than my own brain just causes extra confusion.

Give a human a job making sure other humans get what they need.

Also seconded on being here, connecting with us, and fighting for Canadians. 馃挭馃А

@vlrny I'm meeting more and more folk with AP issues, so IK can understand why you feel the same. Thanks for sharing.馃槉

.@Paulatics

@SnowyCA I write and produce the podcast myself, with one of my office staff to assist me. We don鈥檛 have the resources to transcribe it ourselves. But it is something for us to consider, going forward. I guess we could use the Apple generated one as a base and then improve it.
@Paulatics
"We don't have the resources to transcribe it"
That truly makes me sad to learn because too many folk will be left out of the information loop, and vulnerable to other sources, many of which are not suitable--maple maga conservatives comes to mind.
I've used speech to text programs and it doesn't take me much time to edit and correct, but I understand you have very little free what with your duties as senator, and the long flights back and forth between Alberta to Ottawa are arduous and exhausting.
Thanks for your thoughtful reply, and thanks again for your service to our country and it's citizens. 馃槉
