No. No. Nine times no. Five very smart Albertans, from across the province, and across the political spectrum, tell me why they think Danielle Smith’s nine referendum questions are racist, or useless, or both. And we ask - why is there no No campaign as yet?? Please do give this vital episode a listen! https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/alberta-unbound/id1511810939?i=1000756773602 #ableg #abpoli #Alberta #AlbertaUnbound #yeg #yyc #cdnpoli #SenateofCanada #DanielleSmith #NaheedNenshi

Perhaps the most important episode of Alberta Unbound we’ve ever recorded. How should we respond to those 9 nasty questions? https://www.podbean.com/ei/pb-tfx3t-1a7c4d3 #ableg #abpoli #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada #cdnpoli
Just Say No: 9 questions, 5 voices

Political scientists Melanee Thomas and Yasmeen Abu-Laben, political strategists Ken Boessenkool and Zain Velji, and constitutional lawyer Patricia Paradis, dive into the nine referendum questions and how Albertans should respond. Here are the nine referendum questions below:  1. Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities? 2. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals with an Alberta-approved immigration status will be eligible for provincially funded programs, such as health care, education and other social services? 3. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for social support programs as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring all individuals with a non-permanent legal immigration status to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months before qualifying for any provincially funded social support programs? 4. Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta charging a reasonable fee or premium to individuals with a non-permanent immigration status living in Alberta for their and their family’s use of the health care and education systems? 5. Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election? 6. Have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King’s Bench and Appeal courts? 7. Abolish the unelected federal Senate? 8. Allow provinces to opt out of federal programs that intrude on provincial jurisdiction such as health care, education, and social services, without a province losing any of the associated federal funding for use in its social programs? 9. Better protect provincial rights from federal interference by giving a province’s laws dealing with provincial or shared areas of constitutional jurisdiction priority over federal laws when the province’s laws and federal laws conflict?

Earlier this month, I hosted a live panel at the University of Alberta’s International Week, with Anne McLellan, former deputy PM, Rickey Yada, the Dean of Agricultural and Life Sciences, and Dr. Charlie Mballa, a poli Sci prof at Campus Saint-Jean. I’m very proud of the resulting podcast, about how Canada, and Alberta, step up to this global moment. https://open.spotify.com/episode/3Ycn1fRLsEnVhh0r5QTiuH?si=dBwUDTdATta483OGitQouA #AlbertaUnbound #cdnpoli #ualberta #Edmonton #yeg #Alberta #Canada #abpoli #separatism #sovereignty #Trump #francophonie #trade

ICYMI - I commend unto you my most excellent podcast interview with break-out stand-up star Faris Hytiaa, the pride of Lethbridge, speaking about his Sudanese roots, Alberta identity, and the future of Canadian comedy. At a moment of both crisis in Sudan, and rising anti-immigrant rhetoric in Canada, this is a very timely listen. (Also includes comedy excerpts, if you need a good laugh today.) #Alberta #AlbertaUnbound #abpoli #Canada #Sudan #yyc
A new episode of Alberta Unbound! And it's a great one - my conversation with Calgary-based Sudanese-Canadian stand up Faris Hytiaa. I recently discovered his comedy - and it is so fresh and funny and unexpected, as is his whole life story. We did this interview a bit differently, and interwove some of his material with our questions. If you're not already a fan - well, you have a great comedian to discover. But our conversation covered everything from the politics of Sudan, to the politics of Alberta, to the meaning of community and identity. This really is a very special episode. https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/home-and-laughing-with-faris-hytiaa/id1511810939?i=1000736616034 #Calgary #Alberta #yyc #Sudan #abpoli #AlbertaUnbound #SenateofCanada #Lethbridge #ULethbridge #CBC
