3/10 from my series of 19th century photos

The most pristine group portrait I have, virtually everyone standing still, so no motion blur from the long exposure.

Two cuts of meat hanging from the doorway and the gents in the back wearing white aprons lead me to conclude these are the employees of a butcher shop. If I had to guess, based on the more urban setting, maybe this is Springfield, MA?

3/10 detail

I'm assuming this is the proprietor of said establishment. Fully decked out in clothing that to my modern eyes looks like a caricature of a 19th century business owner: top hat, frock coat, bow tie, watch chain, handkerchief.

I'd like to think he came to work dressed like this every day, but I suspect he put on his finest duds for the photo.

@jeremyosborn His office would need a special storage just for that hat.
@mvilain Absolutely, and it would stay there most of the time, actually wearing that thing seems very impractical.
@jeremyosborn Of the three women there, one looks pissed off, one looks scared. The one in the middle has a great smirk. She's not taking any of this seriously. Love it.
@bit101 yes, they no doubt had instructions from the photographer to stand absolutely still for at least 5 seconds. That requirement, btw, makes it all the more interesting when you get honest expressions of a person’s personality
@jeremyosborn I'm making up a story in my head just looking at this. She's the owner's daughter. His wife made him give her the job. She thinks it's all a big laugh.
@jeremyosborn Just need to look up the time and location for trotting meetings in the area and you'll nail it.
@bit101 lol, you have no idea how much I’ve pored over the details of these photos. Zoomed into that poster 1600% trying to read that text
