Having a real analog landline phone with a cord (even if it nowadays will almost always be Voice over IP with DSL) will soon be THE thing to have for quite some young(er) people. With a special chair next to it for long calls. Why? People want to have dedicated time and a dedicated physical location for that. Mobile phones are only for voice/text messages anyway. But the real connection is something that wants to come back. @_elena , FYI. You told me to tell you when I "smell" something ;)
@jwildeboer @_elena I guess we need to prepare courses on how to use a rotary phone ;)
@maxheadroom Not really. The user interface is easy to understand. The bigger problem will be to memorise the phone numbers like we did in the olden days ;) @_elena
@jwildeboer my father (91) still does. He was behind the telephone switch board during his military draft. Skill for life
@maxheadroom @_elena
@jwildeboer @maxheadroom @_elena I still know my best friend's phone number from back in the day. Well, rather his parents’ phone number.
@jwildeboer @maxheadroom @_elena Don't need to memorise numbers when you have a book with all the numbers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_directory
Telephone directory - Wikipedia

@aslakr @jwildeboer @maxheadroom routine reminder I should re-memorize my husband's cell phone number 🙊🫠

@_elena that it a good reminder. I should too. Back in the old days I used to keep so many phone numbers in my head with ease..

@aslakr @jwildeboer @maxheadroom

@sarajw Yep. I fear the moment my mobile phone breaks down and I ask someone to lend me theirs only to simply not know what numbers to call :) @_elena @aslakr @maxheadroom

@sarajw @_elena @jwildeboer @maxheadroom «The wrong way is to call from memory; the right way is to consult the Telephone Directory and make sure you have the right number.»

Not sure why one would need the number with a phone without numbers to dial? In smaller communities the switchboard operators would know who to to call anyway (and maybe listen to the conversations)

(from the Wikipedia page on Telephone directory)

@sarajw @_elena @jwildeboer @maxheadroom (In very rural Norway we had switchboard operator phones at home when I was around my first school year around 1980)

@aslakr Oh yes, even better, I'll just carry the yellow pages around with me XD

@_elena @jwildeboer @maxheadroom

Asked no-one: "Wait, is this like /etc/hosts but for phones??"
@aslakr @jwildeboer @maxheadroom @_elena

@jwildeboer thank you Jan 🙏 I have fond memories of the landline phone (with rotary dials) at my grandparents’ house 🥲

I could get one for my child but she loves to FaceTime with my parents

@jwildeboer @_elena Does it have Bluetooth for AirPods?
@niko Absolutely not. It also uses pulse dialling, so I needed to get a FritzBox because that was the only DSL router at the time that still supported it :) @_elena

@jwildeboer @niko @_elena

I think I might have an old fritzbox around here somewhere...
Plot thickens!

@baardhaveland Even the newer ones still support it :) It's a German thing, I guess. Mine is a 7490. @niko @_elena

@jwildeboer

Can't remember which one I have. But as with every other router I have ever used, it's in a box somewhere around here... 😅

@niko @_elena

@jwildeboer @niko @_elena There are converters for pulse dialing to tone dialing. I use one myself. 😁 There are different models available, and there are also DIY solutions. Example: https://amzn.to/4sWiIJC

@jwildeboer @_elena
Okay, I'm all for the idea and the nostalgia, but isn't this particular model a bit too much? 😄
@badnetmask I also have an even more iconic Ericofone hooked up ;) With the rotary dial at the bottom. @_elena

@jwildeboer @_elena ❤️ I have the same model at home and still works. Although my wife and son say it sounds weird 🙄 The do not appreciate vintage technology 😅

@jesgar aw that looks amazing 🤩 so sleek and elegant.

My grandparents' phone looked like this (I could get it from eBay but it wouldn't work because the wiring wouldn't connect)

@jwildeboer

@jwildeboer @_elena

Hold my beer...

This one is for tough calls!

(Not connected atm, hence the dust. But it works! Rubber duck for scale; Size green!)

@baardhaveland wow wow wooooow 😍 and it works!!!!!!

@jwildeboer

@_elena

It works! Tested it back when I actually had a land line. 😁

If I want it up and running again I'll need to connect some extra equipment. Guess that's a project for the upcoming ww3.

@jwildeboer

@jwildeboer this is pretty awesome and also totally understandable 📞 🪑 @_elena
