Can anyone recommend a trustworthy, ethical site to order dried mushrooms? I'm not looking for anything exotic, just something shelf-stable for when I realize this meal needs a few mushrooms.
(Is there a hashtag for this sort of request? Anyhooo, feel free to boost if you think your followers might have suggestions.)

@sbourne your nearest (idk for you, it might be a bit like us) Asian grocer will definitely have dried mushrooms in packets. Shelf stable just about forever.

I got our last packet at the local big chain supermarket in the Asian food section.

@trib Thanks! I'll have to look more closely in that section. One store near me has some listed on their website, but it's been "out of stock" every time I've looked.

@sbourne @trib it kinda got me wondering. Here (Poland) you can get dried mushrooms[*] almost everywhere. Maybe not everywhere, but usually it's not a big problem to find a store where you'll be able to buy them.
But tbh, I've never thought of buying them online.

Mandatory photo.

[*] Although there are some "best before" dates, most can be stored almost indefinitely.

@gim @sbourne interesting aside: our property (100 acres of forest) has fungi growing everywhere. There's no way I'd eat any of it, as you can put money on it being lethal.

@trib @sbourne Kinda related. Here there's a long tradition of "mushroom hunting"

Although it's not been cultivated in my family, so I don't know much about various species, therefore I don't do it on my own. I took part more than once as a member of a larger group. It is a really calming experience.

From what I've heard in the US there are some local clubs/organizations/events/tours, where you can go foraging mushrooms with help from mycophiles.

@gim @trib I've learned that I know enough about the mushrooms that grow around me that I would never forage on my own! Morels I'm confident about, so they're an exception. I assume everything else is going to try to make me sick or the squirrels would have eaten it already.
