"A 25 percent cut to public R&D spending would reduce GDP by an amount comparable to the decline in GDP during the Great Recession. Cutting annual public R&D spending in half would making the average American approximately $10,000 poorer (in today’s dollars) than the value implied by the historical trend in GDP. Cutting public R&D would also shrink federal government revenue. A 25 percent cut in R&D would decrease revenue by approximately 4.3 percent annually..."

Preliminary Estimates of the Macroeconomic Costs of Cutting Federal Funding for Scientific Research

Federal agencies such as NIH and NSF are critical sources of funding for basic and applied scientific research. Recently, many of these agencies have seen their research operations frozen or downsized. This brief describes a new analysis of the macroeconomic costs of cutting federal funding for scientific R&D. The brief finds that budget cuts to public R&D would significantly hurt the economy in the long run, with large negative effects on GDP, investment, and government revenue. A 25 percent cut to public R&D spending would reduce GDP by an amount comparable to the decline in GDP during the Great Recession. Cutting annual public R&D spending in half would making the average American approximately $10,000 poorer (in today’s dollars) than the value implied by the historical trend in GDP. Cutting public R&D would also shrink federal government revenue. A 25 percent cut in R&D would decrease revenue by approximately 4.3 percent annually, while a 50 percent cut would decrease it by 8.6 percent annually.

Will have to read Fieldhouse and Mertens. To say nothing of the tariffs lol.

Funny that paper predicting 1.5% reduction GDP from cancelling the National Science Foundation budget didn't include a ballpark for 100% of its budget being suspended.

How far are we from RFK Jr declaring autism spectrum disorder a dysgenic condition and starts a civil war to destroy Elon Musk's sperm bank?

If families that normally bought 250 pencils will now have to suffice with 5 -- as Trump warns will be the predictable outcome of his trade war and cancellation of most federal investment in research -- that implies a reduction in household income of 98%.

Seems a little pessimistic.

It's hilariously convenient that we are ending all federal funding for scientific research except AI at the same time as AI is deskilling the next generation of scientists.

Couldn't zero out the science budget, still refusing to spend the money: "analysts have a laundry list of other worries, including a flat budget in a time of high inflation, increasing politicization at the agencies, and signs that the administration has been trying to block congressionally mandated spending... The NIH declined to comment on the record for this story. For budget questions, the agency referred C&EN to the OMB, which did not respond."
