So we might infer that the price of a tonne of carbon should be $1,000.

The EU has one of the highest carbon prices. It’s currently at about €68 ($79) per tonne, so at least 12x too low

…World oil production is split between state-owned and privately-owned companies.

About two thirds of production is from the state-owned sector.

So we can probably say with confidence that, in and of itself, nationalising oil companies will change nothing.

What we need instead is nothing less than a “cultural and spiritual transformation”:

…There is of course no way that an economy addicted to trillions of fossil fuel slaves is going to set a carbon price which negates that short term reward. The golden goose will not be killed via economic policy.

But it could be that losing human fertility is the gateway to radically detoxing our existence from plastic. Which could be the gateway to the cultural transformation needed

…It was a beautiful day in Southsea yesterday, so naturally people were out on the beach with food.

This morning the seafront was littered with food waste, food packaging and throwaway plates and cutlery. It’s clear that people had tried to do the right thing but the bins were overflowing and the foxes had had at it overnight.

The masterplanners of Southsea’s £150+ million defence-against-sea-level-rise-and-face-lift have failed to factor in just how much waste we now create…

…and of course the majority of that waste is the one-time use of non-renewable fossil fuels in the form of plastic.

Plastic which is toxifying our food, our water and us.

And now fertility is declining, and a whole slew of other health risks are correlated.

Plastic *is* fossil hydrocarbons. Perhaps we might see more clearly that fossil fuels are killing us as we struggle to procreate

Not only us but the entire environment. The ocean is awash in plastic particles.

I hold out a little hope for the situation, though because everywhere in the ocean, and in the soil are microbes that metabolize hydrocarbons or can metabolize hydrocarbons.

Certainly without the global economy. The great simplification has been given a substantial nudge thanks to Donald Trump of all things. I am glad to see Nate moving into a different phase now by having a series of talks about organizing to face both the challenge being shoved in our faces, but also the opportunity to get off the crazy choo-choo train.
