*laughs and laughs and laughs*
@frogglin history is fun 🤓
And sometimes heartbreakingly sad
@frogglin "don't be evil" ...yeah ...right
@frogglin I was such a fan when it first appeared in the late 90s. Practically learned Linux by finding howto’s for everything using Google. Yahoo and Altavista just could not compete (and were indeed full of all the crap listed). Now it has basically turned into its former competitors.

@mkoek

Yes, they immediately showed so much potential.

@frogglin

@pascaline @mkoek @frogglin i never should have left hotbot
@frogglin step 1 of enshittification
@frogglin Once upon a time, there was a simple and effective search engine for websites...
@gisgeek @frogglin
...in a universe far, far away
@raymaccarthy @frogglin Ah, the glorious Digital Equipment Corp. search engine. It worked, but never evolved enough. If Digital had a different policy regarding such a side product, the history would be different.
@frogglin @FreakyFwoof Me too. In 2000, the librarian at my grad school suggested that I start using this fantastic simple webpage for searching the Internet. Boy Howdy! I miss those days too and I'm often reverting to ChatGPT for searching.

@CreativeChris Give
@ecosia a try.
Not that it’s perfect - but I think it’s a better option.

@frogglin @FreakyFwoof

@CreativeChris

And I remember calling someone I knew to tell him I had an investment tip (he was into that): it was brand new but promising. And I had a strong feeling it would get BIG.
He made a lot of money. A lot.
This was the first of two massive tips.

He said he would reward me.
Never did.

@teacher_rick
@ecosia @frogglin @FreakyFwoof

@CreativeChris @frogglin @FreakyFwoof chatgtp as an alternative to google?? From the fire into the frying pan….
@frogglin that was before they were reverse aquired by doubleclick
@frogglin to be honest, for me it feeled that way Ehen I Start using @kagihq which reminded me in that gold old times and how it changed
@frogglin Google was a friend...back then. Now, tis a poisonous metastatic cancer.
@frogglin The only thing left from that era is the "I'm feeling lucky" button.
@frogglin the pitty is, that the best search engine at least when you use an account and cookies for getting good results is still google. I did kot search far but I didn‘t find another search engine supporting my needs with good hits the way google does. And with Ublock and skipping the first paid results google is still working for me. If someone has a better alternative then hit me❣️ ecosia did not work, duckduck neither. Googling for SAP, bicycle stuff, repairs, shopping, etc..
@frogglin they used to be, when Yahoo enshittified Lycos…
@frogglin Company mottos often shrink over time. There was a time when "Don't be too egregiously on-the-nose with your evil-ness." was under consideration in Mountain View.
@frogglin I'm old enough to remember ^^

@frogglin I'm old enough to remember how I advised my community college classes to replace Altavista with this new clean, lean and efficient search engine ...

@frogglin *the laughing slowly turns into crying*
@frogglin Yes, remember “Don’t be evil”? So much for that…
@frogglin
Reginald Jeeves old fellow, could I enquire why the once excellent search engine, Google is now a pile of "stinking shite" - to use the vernacular?
@frogglin
They also hat a Google search box for internal businesses networks. It was so helpful.
... and then the service was terminated.
@frogglin @futurebird Ah yes, back in the day... (checks grey hair and sighs, yeah I'm getting old)
@frogglin how far they have fallen
@frogglin I miss that old internet.
@frogglin the front page is still relatively clean. The insidious part is they moved all thd ads and distractions to the results page, and then hid them.
@frogglin ah, that takes me back to the good auld days of the interwebs!
@frogglin I love the term "portal litter". Early 2000s enterprise web aesthetic was 100% portal litter.
@frogglin thats how it begins..
