Why does an operating system for a piece of computer equipment need the age of the person using it? We already use biometrics like fingerprints, faces, etc for authentication.

What’s significant about age, other than using it as an alternative data point for something harder to assess?

@dahukanna I assume that all this talk of age verification by operating systems is a consequence of "regulatory capture": Everyone is concerned about online harms to children, often due to lack of moderation and irresponsible pushing of content by social media platforms. So there is a push for regulation of those platforms, which at some point gets inexplicably misdirected towards OS age verification. If anyone knows what is really going on here I'd be interested to know.
