Trump administration lifts sanctions on millions of barrels of Iranian oil

The Treasury Department’s authorization of the sale of Iranian crude already at sea is likely to provide revenue for Iran’s war effort against the U.S.

The Washington Post

As the cost of #oil continues to soar, the #Treasury Dept on Friday lifted #sanctions on 140 million barrels of Iranian crude already loaded onto vessels, which the #Trump admin says will help ease prices — but which is also likely to provide revenue for Iran’s #war effort.

The order to “unsanction” the #oil comes as #TrumpsWar in Iran has triggered a global #energy crunch, with the price of oil soaring more than 50% since the #US attacked #Iran late last month.

the action was met with bewilderment by many lawmakers & analysts, who said it will provide the #Iran regime a cash infusion as it actively tries to kill #US #soldiers on the battlefield.

 Brett Erickson, managing principal at Obsidian Risk Advisors, which specializes in financial crime & regulatory issues said, “You don’t unsanction Iranian oil if you’re winding down. This is the action of an administration that has no exit ramp and knows it. The word for that is desperation.”

@Nonilex there's likely some random dude hanging out at mar a lago that stands to benefit from this
@Nonilex while the IEA (rightfully) calls for measures to reduce oil consumption (esp. by traffic: https://www.iea.org/news/new-iea-report-highlights-options-to-ease-oil-price-pressures-on-consumers-in-response-to-middle-east-supply-disruptions), I barely see any action on this by western gouvernments. So disappointing!

@Nonilex

Trump can reduce consumer oil prices within the US without enriching Iran or Russia. He can do two things he absolutely won't.

1. Issue a National Security EO requiring all domestic oil (produced, transported, refined) within the US to be sold within the US. Suspend all exports. 80-90% of oil and gas sold in the US are from the US. We also get oil from Canada.

2. (Discussed in the 1970s OPEC embargo) Trump can declare price/profit control of all domestic oil from wholesale to retail, cost + 3%, during his own-caused National Security emergency.

US consumers are paying global oil prices for domestic US-produced oil untouched by his stupid war. US oil corporations are profiting excessively by preying on US consumers for US oil while simultaneously getting American tax support and tax cuts from Trump's Big July 4, 2025 Tax Relief Bill for Billionaires. The US is a net exporter of oil. Force oil billionaires to give up profiteering. Trump can choose "the Forgotten American" or his Epstein class billionaire pals.

Additionally, Fertilizer is also primarily domestically or North American sourced. Canada is a main source of potash. The same Canada he's threatened.

@Nonilex

this is all about enriching oil companies and getting some kind of kickback through the family in return.

US citizens, US global security, mid east stability, military lives on all sides. they are all being thrown under the bus to enrich his oil pals.

@Nonilex The continued disruption of the oil sector, steers/churns more profit for LNG/fracking, of which the US is the world leader of.

The grift continues...

@Nonilex sanctioned the oil to punish Iran. bombed the oil to cripple Iran. now lifting sanctions on the oil to lower prices at home. three contradictory goals, one commodity.
@Nonilex oil is more important than people to the madman, apparently. Wasn't there a report he was upset the oil storage areas were being bombed. But not upset schools were being bombed?
@Nonilex ... but how much crude is already in transit? Like. What?

@Nonilex

is there a legal point at which someone is so catastrophically stupid and incompetent that the damage they cause to the country constitutes grounds for treason?

@Nonilex

who drops sanctions on the country they are at war with?

Hint: not the one who's winning.
