Storytime: My dad had a mantel clock that he loved. It was wound with a key, and it rang ship's bells. Sadly It stopped working while I was still a kid. After both my parents passed, I expressed the fondness I had for the clock, and so it came to me.

The other day I told my wife that maybe I'd like to try and get it repaired someday.

Which is why my wife took it to a clock restoration shop where, as she pulled it out of the box, the clock guy said "That's a Howard Miller/George Nelson ship's bell clock."

So Howard Miller is apparently a BIG NAME in clocks. George Nelson was a designer with Herman Miller, and Howard Miller clocks designed by Nelson are apparently even more collectible, especially their clocks from the 70s. And finally, the Howard Miller company closed last year, so their clocks will become only more collectible.

Sadly, whoever my dad originally asked to fix it trashed the entire mechanism, and it is unsalvageable. But, an entirely new and genuine mechanism can maybe be bought in Germany.

So, we're going to bite the bullet and try to restore it. I'd love to hear it chime again.

Oh, this is the clock, if you're curious. Interestingly, I cannot find one just like this anywhere online.
@PAgent Your clock is Howard Miller's rough copy of the Chelsea Clock Company's famous ship's clock, specifically the "Mariner" model. HM made a lot of reproductions of clocks from earlier clockmakers.

@technothrasher

Thank you!

@PAgent You're most welcome. I'm always happy to see people wanting to restore the clocks that get passed down in their family.
