Anyone on here have personal experience with heat-pump hot water tanks? Our HWT is overdue for replacement and one of the options I’m looking at is heat pump.

One concern I have is that they (apparently) cause the area where they’re placed to become colder (naturally, as they collect heat from the surrounding environment) which is a bit of worry since our basement is already a bit on the cool side and our oldest son lives down there.

@crispius

I've started to look into them and had this concern as well. There are "split" systems now that have an external (outdoor) unit. These are limited to a few manufacturers, and I'd guess cost more to install, given that they need a refrigerant line run outside... but they do exist.

@crispius I’ve had a heat-pump water heater in my unfinished basement for the last 3 years or so. No one lives in our basement, so not quite the same situation as yours. I’m guessing your basement is finished? If so, and you end putting the HPWH in a separate room, I don’t think you’ll notice any temp difference at all. Ours doesn’t actually run that often, so it’s not always blowing cool air into the space. And in the summer, it would be a bonus.
