Partner's next wood working project is turning a grand piano into a shelf for friends of ours...

@vicgrinberg Oh goodness. How large is this shelf going to be?
@vicgrinberg ambitious! Did he specifically look for a grand piano to reuse the curve for that shelf?
@TimothyRoes no - the leftovers of the piano are a heirloom of our friends and they wanted to turn it into a shelf because they've seen examples if some online...
@vicgrinberg very cool, do post pictures of the end result :)
@vicgrinberg Still a beauty, even in this sorry state... 🥹

@vicgrinberg that wood certainly make a beautiful shelf!

(Sorry)

@vicgrinberg Wow! Looks like real ivory?
@hannorein nah, it's wood, in a not really good state 😅 I don't think partner would be doing the shelf out of it if it were that high level an instrument.
@vicgrinberg Hm. Are you sure? It really looks like real ivory. It was more or less the default until mid 20th century.
@hannorein I'll check when we are back home 😳
@vicgrinberg I might be wrong, but I'm curious now! Let me know ;-)
@hannorein you were very likely right! The body of the keys is wood, but they are covered in a thin layer of what we think is ivory. Thanks for the hint, we would not have known without you!
@vicgrinberg Cool! Thanks for letting me know ;-)

@vicgrinberg Also ich hätte die ja spontan kontaktiert und gefragt ob sie was zur Historie sagen können.
