Poland’s democracy hero Lech Wałęsa and 38 other former political prisoners in Poland have told President Donald Trump that his treatment of Ukraine’s president at the Oval Office last week filled them “with horror and distaste.” In a letter posted on Facebook, they tell Trump that they found it offensive that he expected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to show respect and gratitude for the material assistance which the United States has given Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s invasion. They write that “gratitude is due to the heroic Ukrainian soldiers who shed blood in defense of the values of the free world.” Wałęsa posted the letter on Facebook along with a photograph of himself with Trump.

@goss Protests create visibility and raise awareness when the media is trying to ignore dissent. They encourage greater participation rates among folks who might otherwise have thought they were alone and isolated in their opposition. Protests have always been an essential part of resistance movements everywhere and are not merely "performative", because general strikes will only work if enough people take part.

Nothing will work on its own; resistance must be full-spectrum and unrelenting.

@goss Yes. But that's where numbers come in: I've now seen dozens of vids showing squads of ICE goons backing off due to being overwhelmed by angry - but otherwise peaceful - protestors. I've seen their cavalcades of SUVs bombarded with rubber dildos by crowds. These aren't brave men or the Nazi cosplaying wouldn't have appealed to them.

Will one of them see 50,000 protestors, shit his cowardly pants and indiscriminately spray them with semi-automatic rounds? Possible.

But then it's civil war.
