oh really? yet, a majority of merkans put the odious orange oaf, ergo #project2025, back into the o/o, via their decision either to vote for him, or stay home thus not vote against him. shockingly bad decision, & now not merely merka, but the world, burns. 😡

People can have opinions, even “values”, but fail to act because they live in an individualistic, capitalistic culture where standing up for others is seen as excessive & a threat to the status quo which benefits those at the top of the pile.

Merkans should have to undergo a gap year every 10 years where they live in 3 different countries with less individualistic cultures. (We probably all should do this!)

@Susan60 hmmmm, i suggest that wrt

opinions, even “values”,

a peep's actual actions, not words, fully disclose whether they really do have values, or just opinions. specifically re my OP, IMO i simply do not accept merkan claims of them supporting LGBTQI, climate, environment, social fairness et al, when they put oo into the oo. i believe what they do, not what they say.

for exactly the same reason i continually mock strayans' self-lie of us being an egalitarian easy-going fair decent nation... our voting habits constantly expose the lie.

It’s that old chestnut - is it worse to do the wrong thing, or not do the right thing?

I really think that optional voting grossly understates the value of the right to vote, and the responsibilities of citizenship. It’s makes it too easy for people who are dealing with tough circumstances in their own life to avoid engaging with big picture issues. (Obviously there will be people who really are struggling, but I’m guessing that most people who don’t vote simply can’t be bothered.)

But of course the importance of making informed choices also matters. Aussies can be a bit slack & therefore a bit slow…

We came through with marriage equality, but the “if you don’t know vote no” campaign told people outright that they were under no obligation to find out. If they didn’t know & didn’t care, they had no responsibility to find out.

But of course that’s the norm in the US. I bet there’s whole families who haven’t voted for generations. 😩
