It's easy to make fun of people under 25 for making thrifting and gardening/farming and foraging into pop trends, but to paraphrase my niece:

"older clothes fit better, feel nicer, look cooler, are cheaper, and cost less.

"You can alter them, you can decorate them, you can get clout for finding extremely cool shit

"My friends and I don't understand why anyone would buy new clothes. Fast fashion is destroying the world, and everything it makes sucks."

So there. The kids are alright.

@johnzajac likely the young ones understand new clothes as fast fashion because that is what is available and the elderly understand it as what was there before fast fashion when they still regularly bought new things. So essentially they both mean the same.
@johnzajac @reinderdijkhuis I have always been pro-kid. I think they're way smarter than a lot of (older) adults. 😄

@johnzajac

That's what we were doing in the 80s and 90s. That's what I'm still doing as an old person. There was only a short period where I wasn't.

@johnzajac Your niece sounds like she has her head screwed on properly
@johnzajac @jaredwhite my son goes to different designer clothing stores to look at the clothes (he’s paying attention to the patterns) and then he tailors his own. It’s really amazing to watch (and some of his clothes are really amazing 🤩)
@ecomba @johnzajac Wow, that's so cool!
@jaredwhite @johnzajac it really is (I wanted to reply “thank you”, but I’m doing nothing there, the credit is all his 😄). He even tailored his own leather jacket!
@johnzajac I don't get it. What is there to make fun of in the first place?

@johnzajac This is true of just about everything that does not have external network dependencies.

Old cars are more fixable and don't have tracking devices. Old refrigerators are easy to fix. Old washers and dryers are simple and mechanical.

Quality has got so bad that it's worth keeping old stuff wherever and whenever you can.

Light bulbs, batteries, and television sets have got better.

@johnzajac If you find what you like, not destroy the earth as much, and not support big corporations who are willing to destroy the earth for money as much then it sounds great to me. Of course some people will make fun of it, but some people just can't comprehend why people care about the earth, hate corporations, and/or care more about morals then money.
