i really cannot express how little real activism looks like people's stereotypes of activism. i need help with a ton of things and none of it involves being out on the street marching and/or risking arrest, knocking on people's doors, donating money, and arguing on social media

there was one (1) very specific banner-making request that went unfulfilled this week for lack of capacity (RIP the "free portland free dc" sign for the spirit-thorns home opener tonight) but that's it for standard activism tasks

key activist skills i need: project management skills, ability and willingness to show up to places on time and with things you promised to show up with, artistic abilities, event planning abilities, training and mentorship abilities

@shauna People often confuse organizing work and mobilizing work.

Its one thing to get folks into the streets and a whole different thing to build a community that can weather hardship.

@trashpanda

to be fair I was confused too! if you asked me several years ago (ie beginning of the first trump admin or earlier) i'd have given a very different answer

@shauna Around here the joke is that 75% of activism is just trying to find someone to give a ride to all of the activists who don't own cars ๐Ÿ™ƒ

@pjw

lmao so true. i have encylopedic knowledge of which of my local activist friends own cars and who doesn't and whenever someone asks me if i need a ride i'm always asking "hey can you bring T and S and Z too" because they're neighbors of mine I know also don't drive

@shauna thanks for sharing this because I have those skills! I just donโ€™t know how to apply them to this problem!

@3janeTA

I don't suppose you happen to live in the DC area

@shauna Houston :(

@3janeTA

I suspect there are orgs like Free DC in Houston that you could get involved with, that would greatly appreciate your skills!

@shauna
I can help with short stories, editing, or data cleaning/analysis ... if anyone needs that
@shauna I think we can use this, though.
Locals decided we wanted 'whistle kits' in case. I helped make 3D printing happen.
That whistle kit gathering wasn't going to get noticed but a whole lot of communication happened (and yes, the well planned even happened and people are going to be trained...)
@shauna
Totally.
For me it is keeping up with emails and juggling meal prep with evening Zoom calls that I remember in mid-meal
Keep at it -and good luck
