I didn't want to hijack @RichBartlett post about British values (see below), which was very funny but also a little bit sad (because they are clearly not upheld). And got me thinking what I would say British values are, or more precisely what they should be. Personally, I think buzzwords like kindness and compassion are a little too broad and we've been told this since time immemorial and it doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. So I was thinking..... Check on your neighbours. Feed people who come to your house. Involve yourself in community and lift up those who are struggling. Take responsibility for your local area, not just the border of your property. Say hello and smile at people. If someone tells you to fuck off they're probably just having a bad day don't take it personally. Support your local business. Hold doors open and help older people with shopping. Create, run and compete in a local breakdance competition to save the local town hall from being turned into a Starbucks drive-thru. I dunno really - I'm half messing about. But I would be genuinely interested in knowing people's thoughts of what British values actually are or should be. 😊🫡🇬🇧

Attached: 1 image I keep hearing a lot about 'British Values', and as someone born and educated in Britain I'm not entirely sure what those values are, or who gets to decide what they are. I went to our governments website to find out, and it appears British Values are comma separated. Glad I cleared that up. #british #culture

@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett

It can be summed up in 6 words... no matter your country.

"Try not to be a cunt"

Far too many cunts in this cuntry.

@Anomnomnomaly
I'm reminded of Jeremy Hardy's definition of 'countryside': "To murder Piers Morgan."
@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett
@TheBreadmonkey interestingly if you read Rutger Bregman's book Humankind it says that's pretty much what British people did in crisis (e.g. the Blitz which right wing papers love to bang on about). So I think those ARE our values, the values of real people just trying to live their lives. Part of the problem is that isn't reflected in the media, online or by most of our politicians, which is probably why some people feel a sense of disconnection from reality!
@RichBartlett @TheBreadmonkey
Using the right wing tropes about the blitz is extremely misleading.
The real history of the Blitz •also• included a massive amount of crime including stealing jewellery from dead bomb victims, looting of bombed out shops, rape & murder in the absolute blackouts, and profiteering which went well beyond the 'simple' black market and included bomb shelters built to save money which collapsed on the occupants.
Maybe - but sadly - these also reflect some values still present in 21st century values.
@MikeFromLFE @TheBreadmonkey that's interesting, can you point me to any contemporary accounts?

@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett British values are:

- Criticising other people’s parking.
- Thinking successful women are no better than they ought to be.
- Regarding the rest of the world as a holiday venue rather than a real place.
- Rigid first-come-first-served queue rules (unless you’ve bought a fast track ticket or are at a bar where a different set of rules apply).
- Don’t feed the seagulls. Especially not after midnight.

@Nickiquote @TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett
Always shouting "WAHEY!!!" whenever someone drops a pint glass.
@jamesb @Nickiquote @TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett "Sack the juggler! " surely?
@alexpalacefan @jamesb @TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett I should have added that British values also include a raft of well-worn off-the-shelf banter as a substitute for humour.
@alexpalacefan @Nickiquote @TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett That's for any dropped item except Pint glasses. It's all explained in the addendum.
@TheBreadmonkey Don't jump the queue, say "thanks, Drive'" when alighting the bus, leave enough gravy for the others, and don't ring while Eastenders is on.
@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett distrust people with very white teeth
@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett perhaps this stems from childhood "what white teeth you have grandma!"
I'm pretty sure the sum total of British values is "Fuck Thatcher."

@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett

I strongly believe the only British values worth talking about are good old fashioned working class values (edited to add - NOT the UKIP/reform twats version of good old fashioned values, more the grass roots socialist kind).

Gossiping with neighbors (checking in, building community, not being isolated)

'Work to live, don't live to work'

Pay tax so that those who can't work can still access housing, healthcare, education etc etc.

Bullies never get away with it.

More culture than values but summer garden BBQ's with cheap beer sitting on plastic white chairs and a paddling pool for the kids is fucking heaven.

@JaxVent @TheBreadmonkey paying taxes and being proud to do so and glad to be able to help others who need help should definitely be a value. The "no one pays more tax than they have to" bullshit from Farage can get in the bin.
@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett everyone should be offered tea and biscuits.

And I mean everyone. A nice cup of tea and a sit down can do wonders to restore one's calm and see the people you share it with as *people*.

@TheBreadmonkey @RichBartlett
What I wish/hope British values were:

- Fair play (sportsmanship, but also treating people fairly)

- Queuing nicely (is fair, and much less stressful)

- Tolerance

- Good humour (two people chatting on a train will laugh a lot more in Britain than any other country)
