During family discourse this evening we invented two new words.
Patronoying: being particularly patriarchal, patronising and annoying at the same time.
Enmidification: lesser version of enshitification, to render something 'mid'

With all due respect to everyone involved, I do not care about Tim Apple or his replacement John Apple, and am slightly annoyed it's a lead story on almost all news outlets. I remember when tech industry news was contained to special publications or a Saturday afternoon special lighthearted bbc news segment. I don't need to know this stuff. The only thing I'm interested is in how much tax they're paying now. That should be front page news every day. The company is currently valued at $4.01 trillion and yet their horribly convoluted tax payments have regularly fallen below 1% for their global subsidiaries. Whilst they claim this is made up through their overall tax bill (which is compensated in the States) at something like 24%, this has been heavily disputed with back taxes of $14 billion being ordered by the EU Court of Justice paid in Ireland in 2024. However their revenue in Ireland 2025 was $235 billion, so these numbers are meaningless to them. To put it another way - if you are lucky enough to have a thousand dollars saved in the bank and the tax people come along to tell you there's been an international incident with you massively underpaying your tax bill despite raking massive profits out of the country and you have to put it right - that'll be a little over $3.

STICK THAT ON THE FRONT PAGES YOU GHOULS

"EU staff banned from using AI-generated content in official communications"
Can confirm - we don't use AI generated images on our socials for instance.

EU staff banned from using AI-generated content in official communications

It’s a stark contrast to the approach taken in Washington, where U.S. President Donald Trump has frequently used AI-generated content to get his point across.

It's weird how often technology teams seem to get hung up on broken processes. Whether it's because they were poorly written in the first place, or something changed and they no longer work, there's a refusal to deviate from 'The Process' like its some sort of religious observance. The inability or unwillingness to trust engineers to take appropriate precautions to manage risk or to know how to communicate effectively with the right people feels like a real failure of leadership. If you don't trust your people enough to give them autonomy, and the only way you can ensure the right outcome is to force them down a specific route, should you even be managing people? #organizationalculture #process #leadership #brokenprocesses
I've decided I don't like the use of 'carrot and stick' when talking about people using technology (I also don't like "users"). The carrot and stick implies they're a donkey, or at least they have to be treated like they're stupid. Just reflecting as I listened to someone talk about communicating BYOD policy implications to people who use our services. #communication #treatpeoplelikepeople

About trans rights:

They're a wedge issue. If you think it's okay to deprive trans people of the right to exist in the public sphere then you're saying human rights are conditional and/or can be withdrawn. Which puts you on a slippery slope to no human rights for anyone.

When you trace the roots of the modern anti-trans movement they boil down to some combination of bigotry and billionaire bullshit— the oligarchs think rights are for the rich.

So: trans-rights are human rights. No exceptions.

Today we're in London marching with the Green Party bloc as part of the @togetheralliance.bsky.social against the far right. We're marching for love, hope and unity as a counter to the hatred, despair and division of the far right. Time to show the world who we really are! https://www.togetheralliance.org.uk/

A thing being repeated across businesses worldwide, including at Microsoft, is C level execs struggling to know why most staff aren’t using Copilot for M365, despite how much it costs.

Because most staff don’t spend all day in Teams meetings reading out PowerPoint slides to people who pretend to care. They have actual jobs. Doing work. Which they know how to do. Because it is their job.
